View Full Version : How to use heroin

New York City has produced a "how-to" manual for heroin users. It includes instructions on preparing and administering the drug and maintaining clean veins.
Personally, I don't have a huge problem with this, in the sense that intravenous drug use is one of the biggest spreaders of major diseases.
On the other hand, isn't New York the city that banned trans fats and requires fast food restaurants to have handouts available with nutrition info?

Well, the only thing worse than a heroin addict is an inept and disease-ridden heroin addict. I assume the people needing this information are pretty lowly individuals, so probably need all the help, advice and education they can get - I wouldn't want to inflict a heroin user's injection fistular on anyone.
In Scotland, the heroin supply has recently been cut into a mix which contains anthrax, which I suppose makes a change from baking soda or washing powder.

It's amazing the slack given to young people and musicians when they 'experiment' with drugs. And yet when I 'experiment' with beer there's hell to pay.

I experimented with beer when I was a young'un, and all that it did for me was make me pee a lot.

Me, too! I'll never forget the wise advice of a friend who introduced me to the bar scene when I was 18 (yes, I'm that old now):
Once you start, you never stop.

Providing education is different than providing the drug itself.
Vancouver has a safe injection site and it has done wonders to help prevent the spread of diseases and cut down on the deaths from ODs. Further, there is no proof that safe injection sites encourage non-users to become users. With that being the case, I don't think a little education will hurt anyone.

I agree with you. It's like saying proving teens with sex education will have them all go out an bang everything in sight. The reality of it is, people are using heroine and with this little bit of information, they may prevent spreading diseases. Like Kinch said, I don't think it will encourage non-users to become users, it just lets the users know that there is a safe(r) way of doing it, if you must.

Reminds me of something that just happened in the Milwaukee public schools system. The schools wanted to provide free condoms to high schoolers at the health offices, and of course all kinds of people got all in an uproar for the usual junk. But luckily brains prevailed for once and students now have access to condoms if they go to health services.

My point exactly. I would have been having sex with my boyfriend whether I had sex ed classes or not. The classes actually convinced me to wait because all the STD/pregnancy info absolutely terrified me. But this is another debate for another thread.

Like I said, I'm not against the idea that if people are going to use, make sure they use as safely as possible. That doesn't bother me at all.
What I find weird is that NYC finds it acceptable to unilaterally ban trans fats in restaurants. It's like they're saying "hey, enjoyer of fine foods: we know better than you do what's good for you, so no more fat for you!" while simultaneously helping IV drug users have a more enjoyable drug experience.

The difference is, people aren't ADDICTED to transfats.

I'm sure if there was a less harmful, legal version of heroin, the city would gladly pass that out to drug dealers instead haha As it is, there is a less harmful version of transfats for deep frying.

Lacey while there are lots of substances you can fry with, they do not produce the exact same product as transfats. So in the situation that gary pointed out, the government is telling you that it doesn't matter if the result is different that they know better than you. As an aside there are other drugs that could be "substituted" for heroin.

So, does the government have the right to unilaterally ban it? Just because it's bad for you? If people go into a restaurant and want to order something because it tastes good, regardless of the health aspects, shouldn't that be their right?

With this theory, Gary, why should anything be banned? Why can't people smoke in public places? Why can't people buy their heroine at the pharmacy? Why is marijuana illegal? All is does is cause some health issues...

I'm just playing devil's advocate here people.
And I'm sure all those sophisticated NYers can totally tell the difference between the nontrans fries and trans fries at McDonalds hahaha Just like when they stopped spraying beef tallow on the things.

Well, a couple of thoughts on this one, PA:
First, is the argument of harming yourself versus harming others. Smoking in public places is harmful to others, so therefore banning it in public is similar to banning, I don't know, firing a gun up into the air- not because it's bad for you, but because it's bad for others. Having said that, I'm AGAINST public smoking bans, as I believe it is the right of the business owner- not the government- to decide if smoking should be allowed in his or her establishment.
Second, I'm not opposed to banning trans fat in and of itself, I'm more opposed to the fact that it was done without a vote. Why does the government just get to decide we can't eat it? I'm just very wary about this idea of government as mommy and daddy protecting us little children from ourselves.
Finally, just a general statement: I think heroin and pot and a whole bunch of other stuff should be legal.

Well, you could look at it as the business owner who's selling transfat fried foods as intentionally harming customers, just like the bullet fired into the air
garyrulez
01-05-2010, 08:53 PM
There's a positive and a negative though, as opposed to the bullet in the air.
1. A heaping order of fries cooked in trans fats has positive effects: it's got nutrition, good complex carbs, etc.
2. Unlike the bullet, the customer knows what he's getting. He's making a legal choice to do something that may be harmful to his health, in exchange for some pleasure.

No, the customer doesn't necessarily know what he's getting. He either doesn't know it's cooked in transfats, or has no idea that they're even bad for him.

So, we're back to the government's role being to play mommy and daddy? And, by the way, if you don't know a heaping pile of fries is bad for you, you're too stupid to live anyways.
We spend all of our lives making decisions about doing something productive and healthy versus something less productive and less healthy: we could work out or we could sit on the couch and eat chips. Should the government regulate our choices in this decision making process?

That is easy, require that a warning be posted like the one in a bar for alcohol.

I'm going to see if I can order this at the cafeteria. I'm hungry enough to eat it, even if it's on 6-grain bread instead of 12-grain.
