I was thinking, wouldn't it be cool if BNL recorded over the upcoming tour and released a new live album? What do you guys think of the idea?

I think, thatīs a very good idea to win back old fans an win new ones; but:
they have already said there will be live recordings of future concerts. Like in the past concerts have been available for download or purchase via Nettwerk. I think this will be a logistically much easier and faster way (given that Nettwerk isnīt a part in this equation any more :p) than producing a live-CD and pushing it through the 'conventional' channels. Conventional meaning classic '90s marketing... records shop, and stuff...
AND everybody attending a concert will be able to get her or his concert, with all the banter they heard live, reliving the memories...
So, I guess, there will be live records. Plural. One for (almost) each concert ;)

ditto - I just want a live recording of every show I see. That's not too much right? ;)
From me that will earn them far more $ than me buying 1 live CD. Plus they just did that not to far off with "Talk to the Hand" so they'd likely want a few more albums to come out before they do that again.

In a way, I was a bit disappointed with Talk to the Hand. It had none of the live vibe we're so used to with the concert downloads. In retrospect, Rock Spectacle is similar.
I much prefer the live downloads. My only complaint with those is how inconsistent the track labelling (or lack thereof in many cases) is. But it's easily fixable, so meh.
The next step will be concert video downloads :)

Now that is something that I would be VERY interested in! I do love hearing the live shows, but to be able to see their expressions and movements would be even better!
Great suggestions KingDave!

If there were concert video downloads; this would mean having our views blocked by professional video cameras all the time. I would not like that very much. At least not for every show.

I can't say I'd revel in having cameras all over the place. However, I have a feeling a lot of the bigger shows in the US tend to have cameras for the video screens, so it could be a natural extension of that. They could probably have a couple more up in the balconies with long lenses, so you've got covereage down the front, and from further out.
No cranes though. I HATE crane shots in live music videos. They're just so naff. Look, the crowd! Look! LOOK!!!
We get it, there's a crowd!

You're right, if they use cameras for the video screens anyway, it would be cool if they made that recorded material available to fans.
I don't feel the need for another live album just yet. Maybe in 2-3 albums time. But as is mentioned, I think they will continue to record every show so I would be interesting in buying the shows I attend, and spending my money that way. I also too would hope that maybe one day, with the advance of technology, concert videos of each show would become available. We can hope...
I've always wanted a live recording of the band doing some of the goofiest covers imaginable. Seriously, just a bunch of nonsense, sort of like our tres cool cruise coverband Acid Wish (wish I was on a cruise!).
Not even things that fans ask for, but songs they've always wanted to cover. And yes, Tyler, IF HE MUST, can sing "Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" by BTO. If he absolutely must, tho.
It doesn't have to be the super extended long play version of something with Hey Jude thrown in 18,000 times, but something like how Kevin re-imagined War Pigs, etc.
Just for fun in the meantime while waiting for an album would be nice. Seriously, it's not like they have to WRITE the covers or something! ;)

The Ships & Dip Covers show was awesome. Ed covering Crowded House? *swoon*
I agree, an all-live-covers album (even if it was just a download for us) would kick mucho ass. :D

I think an all-covers album would be a nightmare to release just because of the rights issues.
I can still fantasize about a covers album, regardless as to whether they could logistically do it. Mechanical license.

In other words, Shhhh... let Mace and I sit over here in the corner and fantasize. ;)
Suebee, say they DID do a live album of covers - who would you like to hear them cover? I SUPPOSE it could be something you've heard them do, but anything would be interesting!
People have talked a million times, too, about getting collections of particularly funny banters over the years. Most people have them from DLing off the net, but some people don't have them and would enjoy it, I bet - could be fun!

This would be the type of thing I would like in the box set - if that ever does see the light of day (I realise it is not a priority).
I was hoping the box set could've been something like:
Disc of B-sides/rarities
Live disc
Disc of collection of ad-libs
DVD
...etc. Perhaps it could be an option if they do ever release it. :)

A banter compilation would be great. There was as my memory serves a hilarious banter about a bus at the free show they did at South Street Seaport in 1997 (I think) that I wish I could hear again. I'll put my order in for that one.

So hard... ungh.
Well, certainly the Crowded House song Ed did on S&DV ... which one it was utterly escapes me right now... I only remember squeeing "Crowded House!!!!" when it started... LOL). I think it was Distant Sun.
If Steve was still around (alas), I'd want to hear him cover Tom Jones' "Help Yourself." LOL! But I digress.
"Crazy Train," of course. LOL!
"Word Up" from Don't Talk, Dance :D
"Sadness Part One" by Enigma (LOL)
"Get Up Offa That Thing" - James Brown (epic)
"Don't Stop Believin'" - Journey (that one's for Kristen)
"Jesse's Girl" - Rick Springfield (that one's for Jen)
"Sweet Home Alabama," of course (Skynyrrrrrrd)
Anything by The Monkees :D
"In The Air Tonight" - Phill Collins (adoy. DRUM SOLO!)
"I Got You" - Split Enz
I think I'm good. I'm sure there's stuff further down in my iTunes collection, but my eyes are crossing. LOL!
I think the Crowded House song was "Distant Sun". I love it. :)

Yeah, I skimmed through my collection, and that was the conclusion I came to, as well. I knew it wasn't Private Universe, which is one of my favorites, though it was poking my brain. All I needed was a title list to find it. LOL!
I loved Crowded House before I even heard of BNL (or even before BNL existed, frankly), so knowing Ed is a fan makes me all happy. :D

I've always wanted to hear them take on "I'm Alright" by Kenny Loggins. I just know they would make it their own in a way that I wouldn't expect, and I can only imagine whether Jim or Tyler would take on the "Dododododo" part--either one could nail it, I'm sure. And of course, "Ring of Fire" is another one I've always wanted to hear...stupid NYC show that was the first in years I hadn't gone to, and they did it there!

I really miss the medleys they used to do at the end of IIHAMD. I wouldn't cry to have one or two of those on a collection of some sort.

Journey would amuse me a lot too. Not sure of any of my one own original ideas at the moment.

Must get out of 'no-cruise funk'......

I'd never thought of that, but now that you mention it, it sounds perfect! "Hold Me Now" by the Thompson Twins just came on my shuffle and after reading this thread, I thought, "Jim!"

Covers.
Hide Your Love Away - the Beatles
Hot Fun in the Summertime - Sly & tf Stone
Crazy - the Willy Nelson/Patsy Cline
Don't Laugh - Teddy Bear's Picnic (because Great Grinning Ghosts/Snacktime is so awesome)
The Kiss Covers:
Detroit Rock City
....I know there is a second one
God Only Knows - The Beach boys
for a start.
Acid Wish/Last Night Jam Sessions really would be fun!
I sometimes think that Rush would be nice in terms of covers, but it seems so predictable. Besides, I think it's likely against their "religion" (Canadianical) to play it any differently than originally recorded.

I think it was "I Ran Away" and I found it to be sort-of a non-friendly jab. JMHO.

Please to explain?
I mean, it's not like Ed's come out and SAID this was about Steve's departure (has he?). We've just all inferred it.

It was a joke, Becky. After the Beatles split, there were a few songs that they wrote about one another; Paul wrote "Too Many People," to which John (angrily) replied with "How Do You Sleep?"
Even Ringo got into the act, with his very sweet plea to his pals called "Early 1970".

Shell- I luv you for knowing all of this. I actually thought the same thing- the beetle pic from the inside cover of RAM - I don't want BNL to go there. So far- they've all been respectful of eacother -I hope it stays that way. "I want to believe " -they can still be friends.

OK. I just didn't 'get it' - guess I'm too young. ;) (Which is even funnier considering I'm NOT young! LOL)
I still stand by my position that Steve's response tweet didn't seem very much like a joke. But, I'm not that close with him to be able to know whether it was or not. Eh. Oh well.
