View Full Version : Other music!
Thought it would be cool to see what other music people are into!
The BNL fan-base seems to have very good taste, and I know that I personally have got into a lot of other musicians through this community, which I am very thankful for. A lot of BNL's opening acts from over the years are now some of my other favourite artists!
Some of my favourites include:
Guster, Jason Mraz, Reel Big Fish, Ben Folds, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Gavin DeGraw, They Might Be Giants.

My list:
Guster - only a recent liking for me. I'm quite frankly amazed it took me so long.
Foo Fighters
Pink Floyd - I consider Dark Side of The Moon almost a single song. You've just got to listen to the whole thing to appreciate it. I feel I should one day listen to it with big headphones, sat cross-legged on a beanbag, with my eyes closed.
Fastball - so, so, SO underrated. These guys rock hard. Little White Lies, the titular track from their latest is just a fupping amazing song.
Doves - Can't beat some Manchester alt-rock now and then :)
Fountains of Wayne
Chatham County Line - Bluegrass. Yeehaw! These guys also do the 'all around one microphone' thing, so they've gotta be good...
Cherry Ghost - New album soon. NOT SOON ENOUGH
Dixie Chicks - For those Country moments
Eagles - Similar, but with a harder edge. And the five (now four) part harmonies of WIN.
Bellowhead - Good old fashioned folk, but with a modern edge. Their 'percussionist' plays an Ikea cutlery pot as one of his instruments...
Sia - Awesome voice
Others I've been liking a lot lately:
The Unthanks (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bRR6DVWEUM)
Stornoway (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qr_ZhrQ_G9c) And another song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UoxFreQqp4Q)
Pixie Lott - Cry Me Out (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emQQERp_vTI). She's only little but by god can she sing!
Oh, and just for the record, I think Autotune is the devil.
Dave, I thank you so much for mentioning Pixie Lott there. I don't need an excuse to think about her, but you just gave me one anyway. Of course, it's all about the singing... honestly...

I've been listening to a lot of Mountain Goats since the last cruise (and a fair bit of Mike Evin, Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet too). Apart from that it's mostly BNL related music I like with some Shawn Mullins, Carbon Leaf and The Beautiful South thrown in for good measure. There's a whole lot of other stuff I listen to too but it's mostly just one or two songs from various artists.

I am a huge Elton John fan, so that must be said.
In terms of who I listen to that others might not know, mostly a cappella stuff:
-Retrocity (rhymes with atrocity, not retro-city): www.retrocity.ca (and you can listen to their album online at http://retrocity.bandcamp.com/) - a cappella 80s music group from Toronto
- Petra Haden - she did those Prius commercial songs. She has an entirely a cappella album that's only her voice doing every part (the Prius songs are off of that album). She does a pretty cool Don't Stop Believin' but I really like Let Your Love Flow
- Cadence - also from Toronto, and shares some members of Retrocity, but a wider repertoire (http://www.cadence-unplugged.com/index.php?page=home)

British rock singer and songwriter Peter Gabriel has taken what he calls the "scary" step of paring down a new album of cover songs confined to orchestral instruments and his voice.
Called "Scratch my Back," the album is being released in the United Kingdom on February 15 and the United States on March 2. It is Gabriel's first solo album in eight years and features 12 covers of artists ranging from experienced to emerging, including Radiohead, Talking Heads and Regina Spektor.
But it is far from just another album of cover songs, according to the singer who just turned 60 years-old. He said that in return, the artists will reinterpret Gabriel's songs on a second album called "I'll Scratch Yours."
"It's scary," Gabriel told Reuters about the album and an upcoming tour of Europe in March and the United States in May. "But I wanted to do something a little bit different and something quite fresh for me."
Early reviews have described "Scratch My Back" as a poignant, contemplative album that is stripped down to the essentials, featuring just Gabriel's voice accompanied by chamber instruments as well as brass and keyboards.
"I thought we could take away the guitar and take away the drums and just use the pallet of the piano and the orchestra," he said. "Normally I have a thing about how to fix the lyrics or the arrangement, and on this I was really focused on being a singer and interpreting songs, so that was good.
"Some of it is quite stark and empty but from my taste it works better as a whole," he added.
SCRATCHING BACKS
Songs featured on the album include "Street Spirit" from Radiohead, "The Boy in the Bubble" from Paul Simon as well as a slowed down version of David Bowie's "Heroes", Talking Head's "Listening Wind" and Regina Spektor's "Apres Moi."
Gabriel also covers songs by Neil Young, Arcade Fire, Lou Reed, Elbow and The Magnetic Fields, who have already recorded an electronic version of Gabriel's "Not One Of Us" for release on the second album.
The former Genesis singer said his new project was born of wanting to collaborate with the other artists.
"To do a covers album seemed a bit boring to me, so I really thought maybe we could do a swapping process where, 'you do one of my albums, I do one of yours', along with some dialogue and interaction," he said.
Gabriel has made many bold moves in a long career, starting with leaving Genesis, who will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next month.
"It was my childhood, if you like, my teenage years but for some of the band it has been twenty to thirty years ," Gabriel said.
But his career longevity does not mean he is out of touch with the current state of the record business and new developments in music.
"As a young man I always tried to follow what was going on," he said. "Now I just follow the same interests."

Yanno, when I first saw her and started hearing about her - I was like - good gawd, who the heck is that?
Then I saw her on the Grammy's with Elton John and the look she was giving him was just pure adoration - like he was her idol and this moment really meant a lot to her. She was either a good actor or she really was in the moment and I gained a lot of respect for her - or for what I believed was her honesty and how that showed thru. It sure makes sense if he's an idol of hers - flamboyance personified.

I didn't really like her at first either, but lately I've seen a few interviews she's done (Barbara Walters for one) and she seems very genuine and normal, shockingly. McFly are awesome - I didn't realise they were well known in America and Canada?
They're a British band, started off as a kinda novelty "pretty boys with guitars" kinda band, marketed at the teen audience, but have since evolved into something quite wonderful - great pop songs, fun lyrics, a brilliant live act. They've got kinda rockier with each album and their latest "Radio Active" is their best yet. I can't recommend them highly enough! :)

They're not that popular here, I guess that's the problem. I found out about them because I loved Busted (woah, there's a blast from the past), and they were semi released here. I also used to watch TOTP here on BBC Canada and buy TOTP and a few other British music magazines we got here in Canada. My CD collection is filled with UK music that's not released here, and when I went to England a couple of years ago I came home with over 35 cd's.

You want to speak to my girlfriend, in that case. Biggest Busted nut I've ever heard of - even to this day, and they've been split up for years. I didn't appreciate them at the time, but I've actually got quite into them since. Nothing wrong with them! :)

Busted were kinda panned at the time by everyone who wasn't a female teenager, because they were a "boy band with guitars", but actually now I do consider them quite credible songwriters - some of James Bourne's solo stuff is actually very good. :)

Have you heard James' Future Boy stuff? I did like Son of Dork (I'm so sad they fell apart as quickly as they did, although not surprised), but I didn't like Matt's solo stuff or stupid Fightstar very much at all.
Yeah, I've caught Gemma playing some Future Boy stuff and it sounds pretty good - although definitely a departure from the Busted sound (more electronic, probably more poppy). I quite like it and from what I understand it's out on iTunes pretty soon. I know that he started a band called Call Me When I'm 18 a year or so ago, and posted a song on their myspace called "Break It" which I absolutely LOVED, but I don't know if anything is actually going to come of that now, which seems a shame. Son Of Dork were good, but yeah a bit short-lived. They had a tour with Wheatus and Bowling For Soup which would have been a ton of fun!
I'm not too familiar with Matt's solo stuff (mainly because I wasn't a "fan" at the time - well, not until now where I hear it lots around the house anyway! ;) ), but I don't think it fared too well over here. Couple of songs in the charts, one on a film soundtrack, but then he kinda fizzled out. I believe he's coming back to do some TV work soon though!
There's always rumours in the papers over here that Busted will get back together and tour again etc etc, but I really don't think that is going to happen - particularly, as you say, with Charlie involved with his Fightstar stuff. The ironic thing about all that was that he left Busted to get away from the teen audience and the 'pop world' in order to be more of a (what he would think of as) 'credible musician' with Fightstar. So he went off and played all this heavier stuff and appeared in all the more 'mature' magazines for a little while... but now it seems he may well be quite strapped for cash, as Fightstar are now playing loads of pop festivals along with Girls Aloud, Sugababes etc - so he's pretty much back to where he didn't want to be before! The guy seems like an idiot - I know that Gemma certainly isn't a fan these days, as he split up her favourite band!
I'm surprised to find a Busted fan on here, although I have always maintained that there are similarities between them and BNL - fun pop/rock songs, multiple singers, entertaining and energetic, side projects... etc etc... maybe it's a bit of a stretch, but hey these days I enjoy them. Now if only I can work it the other way around and get Gemma to enjoy a bit of MY favourite band... ;) Haha.

James seems to go through things so quickly. I was just reading somewhere that Future Boy is his solo project, so they can't break up. I guess that kind of defines what keeps happening to his bands. I don't know though. He's one of the most creative song writers I've ever seen in my life.
Matt's just kind of fizzed out. His two singles were pretty good, especially the one. His album was just alright. I think I expected so much more of him because he was in Busted, yet it was basically all James for the most part. And Charlie, well he's a whole different story. I didn't like him from the beginning... then he pulled the whole I need to be cooler thing. I had NO IDEA he was basically back where he was before. That's pretty hilarious. In fact, I love it. That's what he gets for tearing a great band apart. (however, I laugh at this and I love Girls Aloud and Sugababes... okay not so much Sugababes newest stuff, that is just weird).
I can see what you mean about BNL and Busted kinda being the same... almost maybe even McFly for that matter. There music is all fun, and can be serious. But its the lyrics that kind of makes them all the same. Especially the stuff on Room on the Third Floor, Motion in the Ocean and Radio:ACTIVE.
Your girlfriend should totally like your favourite band more, especially if you've started listening to hers more and more haha

The Beautiful South - I actually credit them for getting me properly into the BNL in 1999 when BNL supported TBS on their UK arena tour. I had heard of them before then, but they were not majorly known within the UK.

Re: Crowded House - Not sure if you've seen this yet or not, but Ed does a GREAT acoustic version of "Distant Sun" on the Bathroom Sessions. Search on YouTube for Barenaked Ladies Distant Sun.
Re: The Fratellis - This was a pleasant surprise, as I think I'm one of the few Fratellis fan I know (then again, I'm not sure how popular they are in America compared to the UK). I know "Chelsea Dagger" is used a lot in the NHL as a song to play after someone scores a goal, but that's about it (or maybe I need to hang out with people who have better taste in music, ha).

I love it, too, but I can honestly say that I could never dance to Joy Division. I can, however, dance to New Order. "World in Motion" always sets me to skankin' aboot.

Hence the next line, "...and celebrate the irony..." ;)
