This reminds me of the time Warren Zevon's son auctioned off one of his dad's amazing Steinberger guitars, and it ended up selling for like $500 or whatever the price of a new one is. That was weird.

This is bizzaro. He must need some money pretty bad. I'm sorta embarrassed for him and he was never my fav.

McGerkey

What? I'm pretty sure he just feels bad about dropping 89898998089089$ on a nice new guitar so he's selling the old shit he doesn't use.

Yeah. I'm pretty sure he's not struggling. Didn't he say he was donating the offset cost to charity the other day?

The guy can apparently do no right!

Yes, he did:
http://twitter.com/stevenpage/status/25556925448

The purchase presumably being the Gibson ES-335 he had just tweeted about buying. It's one of the oldest models of guitar of its type. So who knows what the "offset" is. They can range from $2,200 for a current model new (presumably less for used) all the way up the scale. The highest purchased one on ebay right now (a 1967 vintage) went for $4,200, but a 1964 vintage got bids up to $10k though reserve wasn't met. And while they haven't been bought yet, there's one on ebay right now by a seller who thinks his 1963 is worth 87 grand so... the guitar could be pricey if it's vintaage.

You can look at this the other way, as well. Steve has at least four Guild D55 dreadnaughts, he has at least two Composite Acoustics dreadnaughts, he has his Taylor small-body acoustic, and he has a Guild JF-55-12 12-string acoustic (presuming he hasn't disposed of any of his recently-played guitars privately). He may still have his Gibson Blues King from the pre-Maroon days. He may also have other acoustics I'm not aware of. That said, 95% of the time I've seen him play acoustic in the last few years (BNL or solo), it's been a D55, a Composite Acoustic or his small-body Taylor.

In a context where he has tours of 25-song set shows at major venues with techs to set up his guitars, TV appearances the same day where he needs to have other gear, far away shows where he needs to send separate gear ahead, home gear so he has guitars to play at home or at local solo shows while the band gear goes into storage, a storage space big enough to hold all his gear; he might need all (or at least a good number) of those guitars. But he's in a different context now and he has way more than he probably needs. If he wants to get something new, I don't see the issue with selling something old to pay for it, whether or not you can afford to keep both.

He barely ever used the Taylor 910 other than some of his TVP solo shows. If he's choosing to sell it, it probably isn't one of his favourites to play. You might move a TV to another room if you bought a big new better one, but at some point you have more TVs than you need and you don't have room to keep them even though they work. There's nothing wrong with selling one to be rid of it, and not because you are desperate for cash (if Steve was struggling for cash, he probably wouldn't have bought an expensive ES-335. He doesn't NEED to buy that; he Starfires and may still have an ES-135 that would be similar types of guitars (his PRS hollowbodies are a bit similar as well).

As to the other item he recently sold, It was suggested that the Voxbox was one of the best Bass DIs around. It may have been something bought because Jim preferred it or one of the other guys that Steve no longer needs.

This is all just my two cents though; I don't have any insight you guys don't into his situation.

Well I don't know if THAT'S entirely necessary - Appleblossom has a right to feel that way, especially as a long-time fan who, like many of us, are still getting used to the change.

But, Appleblossom, are you even giving Steven a chance as a solo artist? His new album, Page One, sounds almost identical to the stuff he was writing for BnL back in the day. In fact, I personally think the new Page stuff sounds more like classic BnL than the new BnL stuff! He's still getting gigs, and he's doing what he loves to do, even moreso now than when his creativity was being pushed to the back of the band. Would the band honestly have been better off if he had stuck around?

To be honest, I think part of the reason Steve is pushing himself away from the band now is because of the fans who have given him the middle finger after so many years of him busting his ass for us.

It's just weird for me seeing people factoring in his personal life as if 1- it's any of their/our business and 2- it matters.

My money's on appleblossom28 being a weird old cat lady/soccermom who watches too much E! and reality TV. Also possibility of being that nosy neighbor everyone hates.

Calling someone "retarded" for voicing their opinion on a messageboard isn't exactly the friendliest thing you could do. Why not just say "I don't see where you're coming from?" I don't think we need a shitload of arguments going on around here.

Dude, I live on the Internet, I know what goes on, but that doesn't make it any more right for you to be a jerk to other members. I thought this was a fun fan community, not a bitching post of closed-minded hatred. Whatever, I'm done arguing with you about this. How much are the guitars going for?

Personally, I think it's cool of him to sell it, regardless of what the reason may be. And if I had the cash, I'd totally bid my ass off to get one of his guitars because it'd be a cool little piece of history to have.

I think divided loyalties are a natural effect of the split... especially when relations between BNL and Steve are still strained. It's a little like maintaining friendships with both parties after a divorce!

I doubt Steve & BNL want us to have to choose a side, as both sides would lose followers in the process. If Steve's new material has a classic BNL sound, we're in the fortunate position of having double the output of music we love.

As far as Steve's personal life & choices go.... it's easy to make judgements, but we don't know the facts of the situation... only those directly involved can judge. One thing that the changes in his life indicate is that he was very unhappy before he made them.

From what I can gather, all involved feel that the changes were needed, and all seem happier now.

If you're willing to make the 4-hour drive he'll be in Pittsburgh next Tuesday on the same bill as Smash Mouth for only $30, proceeds to benefit breast cancer awareness... =)

I mean like an actual show though. With his nice new band.

I know you guys wanna look like some internet superheroes, defending the rights of all the black people who aren't here and all, but when I say "*****" I (or anyone else who uses it in the year 2010) really don't mean it in the race sense.

You can interpret it however you want and call me a horrible racist (I'm not) all you want though. I don't even care. It's a nice word that I enjoy using.

Shardith
10-11-2010, 06:44 PM
I figure if it's not a word appropriate for a BNL live show, it's not appropriate for BNL forums.

barenakedfi
10-11-2010, 06:51 PM
There is no appropriate time/place for the word, no matter how "cool" some people think it's become. You can never take the meaning out of that word.

And why do you assume there are no black people here?

Because Barenaked Ladies is the whitest band since white came to White Town.

And I would never say otherwise. I really just have my doubts that anyone on this particular messageboard is black. Just lots of white people making mountains out of molehills for the sake of appearing all racially sensitive. People so insecure about their own racism that they pretend to get offended by words that really do mean nothing to them.

Yall need to chill.

Why on earth should you assume the board is entirely populated by white BNL fans? I have a black fan here who begs to differ
So by your reasoning, anyone who obects to racially offensive language is a closet racist?

McGerkey, I don't care if you're racist or not racist. I don't care if you breathe oxygen or water. I don't care if you have blood or sludge coursing through your veins. What I do care about is that you cease and desist your racist language. If you disagree, I don't care. Read the forum rules.

Oops. Missed that.

Looks like it went for around what you'd expect for a second-hand Taylor.

I guess a BNL-premium would only kick in on something like his Guild.

Alright, don't make me turn this message board around.

No more use of racially charged words. It's creepy to read, regardless of current usage or etymology. Barenaked Ladies message board here, not a place for it.

Posts have been censored. Which I hate doing, but when, based on my inbox, something offends 99% of the readership...

Oops. Missed that.

Looks like it went for around what you'd expect for a second-hand Taylor.

I guess a BNL-premium would only kick in on something like his Guild.

It should be noted that he'd swapped out the expression system for a fishman. I am sure some players out there would appreciate this, but I think the core Taylor fanbase tends to think the expression system is the ultimate pickup. I think that might hurt resale strictly to the Taylor buyers. I would think someone used more prominently like a D55, Bluesbird or something that could be attributed to specfic songs/hits would draw a bit more premium (though he'd probably be less apt to sell those). But one has to keep in mind. A $2k guitar is not chump change. I suspect that for a Steven Page guitar to sell for a BNL premium, it will have to be a perfect storm of a) a BNL fan who b) plays guitar, c) needs or wants a new guitar of that type, d) has 2k lying around that he can part with and e) hears about the auction.

I don't think the non-guitar playing fan or even the casual "I can play old apartment and that's about it" strumming fan would likely shell out 2k for a guitar unelss they had particularly hefty savings and really considered whatever guitar it was as a prized collectable.

I could be wrong, that's just my instinct. I, for example, am a guitar playing BNL fan who wouldn't mind owning another guitar if it was a type I'd play, and had a notable BNL connection, and I might even be able to afford it, but I'm not going to part with 2k most likely unless the guitar for sale is a bit more historically meaningful re: BNL (A D55 might get some bidding, as I found them pretty nice to play)
