Hey people...it's me, Gary.

If any of you people have Time Warner [and I'm betting some of you do, because a) it's the biggest cable provider in the country and b) I'm one of you people] listen up!

Time Warner and Fox are in a massive pissing contest with each other due to the fees Fox is being paid by TW for their lineup of channels. Essentially, the way it works is that TW would pay a per-subscriber fee for a provider's lineup of channels. Like, with Disney, TW might pay, say, 50 cents per subscriber for all the ESPN, ABC, and Disney channels.

Fox's contract with TW is up, and they're adding a new wrinkle to the negotiations: typically, the providers give the cable companies the "free" channels (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX) for free, under the theory that, well, if you didn't have cable, you'd get it free anyways. Now, Fox wants not only a massive per-subscriber increase, but they also want to get paid for the Fox channel itself. The total increase they're looking for is roughly 300%.

They are threatening to completely cut-off Time Warner from all Fox channels, which would mean Fox, Speed, all Fox Sports networks, Fox Soccer, Fox Reality, and FX will go bye bye.

When? TONIGHT. Yeah- unless they reach an agreement, they're claiming they will pull the plug as the ball drops.

That means no bowl games, no NFL playoffs, and in a couple of weeks, no Glee, 24, or American Idol.

How about them apples???

Wow, I had not heard about this! I have TWC, so I am going to have to keep an eye on this! Thanks Gary!

it's crazy, right? We're being treated like the kids of really angry divorcing parents.

I heard something about this a month or so ago. I figured since I had not heard anything lately that they had come to some understanding. I would think the viewers could put some pressure to get it done.

I can't believe I'm gonna say this, but I'm glad I have Comcast ...

Think it was Direct TV that recently settled with ABC - after not carrying that network for a time.

So, what happened? Do you still have FOX, et al?

I'm with Fox on this one, actually. I think TWC pays more for TNT or something than Fox is asking for all their channels combined. Granted, I HATE TWC with a passion....But the marketing campaign they came up with was very good, if not deceiving. The whole "roll over" or "stick it to them" thing, except that it was impossible to vote "roll over" on their website hahaha

Anyway, both companies a frickin morons and I'm really sick of this monopolized cable tv bullshit. At least here in MKE, we aren't losing the local Fox affiliate or Fox Sports Network no matter what happens because they're on separate contracts or something. But a big ol' FU out to TWC and Fox.

I'm pretty sure I read today that Fox granted an extension to TW.

I don't know about the DirecTV thing. We have them, and I don't recall losing ABC.

Yeah they did grant an extension so that the bowl games would still be broadcast and all that today. But I guess they reached an agreement a couple hours ago.

It might not have been Direct - I just remember a colleague at work complaining about not have Grey's and something else.

I heard a blurb about the FOX thing - apparently they are now getting .75 cents (I think) for each subscriber as opposed to .30 cents (I think).

I'm not a TWC subscriber, but I have seen advertisements for the last few weeks about the Fox/TWC negotiations... while that was happening, the cable company I do subscribe to (Cablevision) has been in negotiations with Scripps (providers of HGTV and the Food Network). Unfortunately, I heard ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about this until New Year's Day when we found out that the channels were pulled from Cablevision.... that, however, did not stop Cablevision from increasing our bill this month...
