You should have seen the thread he posted on the other boards last night, Gary. I asked where he was going to spam his new music once the board is gone, and he went crazy, sent me nasty PMs, got pissed when I posted them, etc etc etc. It was EPIC. And gone, this morning :(

I did see it Lacey, and it was incredible- I checked it at home, then I got all excited to get into work and start posting my ass off...and then it was gone.

I don't want to exaggerate, but it may have ruined all of 2009 for me.

So, I'm sitting in my computer room on one of the last days of 2009 and I spot my music stand with a sheet of music just sitting there...silent...I was practicing a song which requires a capo at the 5th fret and the partial song on the music stand, (nothing more than a sheet of lined paper unevenly torn off a note pad), notates "Capo 2" at the top of the page in my chicken scratch. In front of it is my copy of the demo I "produced" a few months back and it's blocking some of the lyrics. I grab my camera and place it on the bookshelf in the corner.

Because I'm a guy, I am, (by proxy), lazy. The capo stays at the 5th fret and I begin to play the chords I have scribbled there and...

I'd leave the Capo there if I were you - very nice sound. It doesn't suit the lyric though... lyric needs to be bigger, grander and a little more profound for those chords. Also, wouldn't singing about a High School thing be better from a reflective perspective from a man of your maturity! Besides, you've had some pretty interesting times and life experiences from what you've said, and so I'd much rather hear you writing about them. Still, the continuing improvement in confidence and playing is plain to see, so keep up the good work!

If I do a new illustration - I post it on my blog. I may go to FB, Twitter and message boards to drive people to my art. Just self promoting.

As long as I- and no one else is actively soliciting money for what they do it's fine.
I know what several people from the various BNL boards do for a living cause they talk about it.
I don't know what your business is. If you wanted to talk about it- totally cool. If you wanted to announce a big deal you made so an online pal or pals could say Congrats!- totally cool.

As long as no one is saying "Buy this" - it's cool

I don't think writing about your business is promoting your venture if you are sharing back and forth with people.Sharing ideas - advice - knowledge and creativity. If all you do is post a link to a site where you sell something - sure- that's using a discussion board as advertising.

Having said that- writing a song- posting it on You Tube and saying "What do you think?" is not doing anything but asking "What do you think?" - and boy, did he get slammed.

Well, I don't want to give anyone else's opinion but I think what got Lacey's dander up was the fact that on the old board literally every post he had was to promote his career.

So, when his very first post here was just a copy and paste of his last post on the old board, I THINK that's what caused Lacey to comment.

Again, I don't want to speak for her- because I'm not the one who said it- but I think that's what she was reacting to.

Oh for christ's sake people. Either you want this thread to go away or you don't. We're getting into dead horse territory again.

Let's be clear: there's two separate things going on here. What happened on the other board, which was me asking him a question, and him overreacting/sending PMs/being weird like usual; and what happened on this board, which was rehashing those events. (In my opinion) If you don't like any of those things, fine, I don't care. Ignore, or report, or whatever you want to do.

Yes, I asked him what I asked him on the other board because I was sick of him posting ONLY to promote his business, even after he's left the board a couple times saying how much he hated most people on it. So my question is, if you don't like most of the people, get banned or leave over and over, overreact to many things people say to you, WHY are you still here? When we all know that he doesn't like us, seeing post after post of just "Hey go click my links! I want clicks!" is a little insulting. I had a valid, if not snarky, question, but hey you really think I'd let the old board go down without a little drama? And he certainly gave it to me with hardly any provocation!

So when I move to the new board and see the same shit, yes, I say something about it, because hot damn it was dramatastic and amusing. If you don't like it, fine, we're on the "new" board now and they probably have their own rules and whatever. If they want to make it clear what those are they can go ahead and tell us to fuck off if they want. If the morality police want to come out of the woodwork because it makes them feel better even though some don't even have plans in participating, fine. But you can't take a post or person completely out of context, and there was a lot of backstory to this one, which is what made it amusing to some people.

If you think I'm a bully, fine. If you all don't freakin' know that by now, what the hell, where have you been? haha I invite Lewis to be a bully right back if he wants. Gary and I do it all the time to each other! My only expectation is that if he wants to be mean, he does it where everyone can see it so people can be accountable for what they say.

Could this not have all been solved by simply reporting the member to the authorities here for a spam post?

If it is *that* clear that self-promotion is his only intention here, then why not just report and get on with things? This "drama" just seems a bit unnecessary.

The only drama about spam posts happened on a different board. The drama here was caused by laughing and talking about it, and people having a problem with it. Maybe Gary did report the post here, I don't know.

OK I really have no idea what's going on here, but this whole thing makes me uncomfortable and it seems pretty unnecessary.

Whatever has happened on other message boards really seems pretty irrelevant. If you don't like someone or what they have to say, just ignore them, ok? Not everyone's going to agree or get along or even like everyone, but can we at least be respectful? Threads like this make people who don't know all of back stories and divisions of friendship (like me, for example) perceive the entire board as hostile, and that's not what we're going for here. It scares people away, longtime fans and new ones too, and can we all at least agree that supporting BNL is a shared goal here??

My loyalties lie with Barenaked Ladies. I put up this board for them, for you guys to have a fun place to connect and chat. That's the mission. This line of posting just alienates everyone.

It doesn't have to be this hard, everyone. Be respectful. Discourse and debate is fantastic and encouraged. Attacking other people is creepy.

Is the main post here spam? Not as far as I can tell. Could this stuff become spammy? Sure, absolutely. But in this context, the only context I'm familiar with, it's not. So I'm gonna lock this thread and remove some of the posts. Not because I want to be a censor, but so we can start over again and keep the ill-will out of the main purpose of this board... BNL. Trust me, there's tons of great news coming.
