What BNL songs stirs you most emotionally? For me it has to be TITNIFAATW. Very sad song.

Long Way Back Home
Especially when I'm gone on deployment, like I am now. :(

For me, for the same reasons its 'When I Fall' and 'What a Good Boy'.
Also 'Home' and 'Off the Hook' make me very emotional.

For me, it has to be "Am I The Only One". I always tear up when I hear it.
But emotions cover a lot of things and whenever I hear "Take It Outside" it reminds me of my high school boyfriend who never would have stood up for me even if you paid him money. It used to make me sad to hear it, to think we stayed together for 5 years, but now it makes me laugh because it describes him to a tee!

Hah, nice.
For me - Break Your Heart, Asleep At the Wheel, For You. I also get charged emotionally when I sing along with Straw Hat and Old Dirty Hank. Don't know why, but gets my goin'!

For me it is "The Same Thing," especially when Ed sings about his "weathered veins"-something about that breaks my heart a little bit.

I think it would have to be Am I The Only One... for reasons I've gone over in another thread. I feel as though I've always known it. There's something deeply familiar..... kind of reminds me of my childhood, even though it hadn't been written then

War On Drugs for me too. But only the live version from East Lansing in 2004. It's jaw droppingly amazing. Steve sang that song with so much emotion. I don't like the studio version all that much, but that live version.....wow.

There are so many, but I would say top 3 are: What A Good Boy, Long Way Back Home, and Moonstone. Same as Darcey, give me WAGB live, pool of tears! Not sure what will happen if I ever hear Moonstone live.......

Never really had one "stir" my emotions until "Half a Heart." If I'm interpreting it right, it's such a great song about letting down your partner and being accountable for it, and wishing for forgiveness.
Then, the S&D V 3rd show happened and I can't even hear "Call and Answer" in my head without getting a lump in my throat, much less hear the whole song without getting misty.

I cannot help but get so teary-eyed to Call and Answer since Barenaked in America when Kev came back.

This is hard because a lot of their music really affects me:
I'd have to say that these are the songs that move me the most:
- Am I The Only One?
- When I Fall
- War on Drugs
- Break Your Heart
- Blame It On Me

I have to add The Love We're In to my list. I listened to it one night and bawled. Ed's voice really gets me in that song.

1) The Love We're In
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Why aren't we making the love we're in?
It could be the last time
You never want to throw that away
So, why aren't we making the love we're in?
2) When I Fall
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My hands clench the squeegee, my secular rosary
3) Old Apartment - that song is the first few years of our marriage verse for verse
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How is the neighbor downstairs, how is her temper this year
4) Life in a Nutshell - it's been our marriage/life forever
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Call me crazy but it really doesn't matter
All that matters to me is she
Her life in a nutshell
No way would she want it to change me
It's not that easy 'cause
My time is often decided for me
For me

no one has said this one yet.... and even though its not quite a BNL song, Ed still wrote it.
He Makes Me Want Her Again gets me every damn time.

I'm a new fan (well, new fan of songs other than the ones everyone and his brother already knows), so I've been trying to catch up on the entire back catalog as quickly as possible. I was driving to the gym tonight and This is the Night I Fell Asleep at the Wheel came on. I swear, it was like somebody kicked me between the eyes. So unbelievably sad and the imagery it conjures up.... it's been a long damn time since a song affected me like that.

I agree with you, Jodie. When listening to "Tonight" it just hits me like that too. It's hard to get caught up in the circus-like fun musical background, but then combining it with the sad lyrics it's a punch in the face.

Ooh, this one's a long list for me...give me any song where Ed sounds sorrowful and you've got me.
For You
Long Way Back Home
When I Fall
Am I The Only One
One and Only
What A Good Boy
Call and Answer
And....this may sound weird, but Pinch Me kinda gets to me too. To me it's about being kind of miserable and wanting things to change but in the end sort of giving up and trying to make the best of what you have. I've felt that so often, but really haven't heard any other song that articulates that in a way I can relate to it.

Call and Answer from S&D V when they dedicated it to Skates' memory. Not a dry eye.

THIS.
It's amazing how many people think of Pinch Me as kind of happy and upbeat, when in reality it's the opposite.

TOTALLY
Pinch Me, as much as it annoyed me before became my "anthem" when I was in the hospital after having a stroke early March. I had it on repeat on my iPod while in the ICU. It wasn't until then that I REALLY got the song. I can't listen to it now and not think "wow, I made it out alive when I shouldn't have but I still feel like I'm going through hell...somebody please pinch me and wake me up".

I too love all their happy little songs about deep, dark things...and that feeling that that was exactly how you felt put to song and feeling that you are the only one who "gets" it...that doesn't necessarily make you feel better -but you don't feel so alone in the tribe of the Walking Wounded. We recognize our own.:( But I love their quirky fun songs too- I love that they have something that seems to match every possible mood. I really can't express how much they have been (and still are) a part of my daily life- they are of my generation and are the soundtrack of my life. It just seems like they see the world through the same prism that I do...
