View Full Version : Barenaked Tattoos

I have been considering a BNL-related tattoo for about 5 years now, but ever since I got my first tattoo (about a year ago) I've been more serious about the thought.

I was just wondering what your thoughts are....pictures of your own? ideas? thoughts?

I have a little thought about what I want, but just wanted some perspective. :)

I have a couple of tattoos that I designed myself. I hadn't though about getting a Barenaked Ladies tattoo. Hmm... I don't really know if I would. That would be something I'd think about for a good long time. As much as I love BnL, it would have to be something really good relating to them for me to get a tattoo of it.

Gee, I LOOOVE the band, but I can't even commit to putting one of the many BNL bumper stickers I have on my precious car, let alone inking my body. I have thought of getting a personalized plate that references BNL, though.

Hmmm...in the meantime, maybe I can commit to putting a bumper sticker on my body!:D

Nothing against tatts. I just find them to have very deep meanings, and the older I get, the deeper those meanings would travel down my body.

I also don't care for the fading. Are tattoos something people refresh? I've always been curious about that, but don't know anyone to ask.

You can definitely get a tattoo "refreshed". I have two and one has a red jewel in it that should be re-colored - it's of a dragon wrapped around a dagger with the jewel in the hilt.

I also have a BNL tattoo - the S&D logo with the years of the trips. I haven't posted pics here yet - ASSume they go up the same way as other boards? I'll go throw it out on a site and come back to post it :)

As far as a good spot - for women, I think the back of the shoulder is good - less travel space there :)

Nice tattoo, WeedMage!
Cynful, people often get tattoos touched up when the start to fade. Some tattoos will fade more than others, depending on where you get it, how much you have it in the sun, how well the tattoo was done, etc.
Both of my tattoos are just black. I had them done about a year apart by two different tattoo artists. The first is on my chest, the second is on my forearm. The first one wasn't done very well, so it faded pretty quickly. The second one still looks awesome. I did a lot of research on tattoo artists in my province before I got the second one done.
I have a friend who got a tattoo on the palm of her hand. She has to get it touched up fairly often.
WeedMage said one of their tattoos has a red jewel in it that need to be touched up. Red fades the fastest in the sun. At least that's the case for ink on paper, I assume it's the same for ink in skin.

Cynful, I agree with you about tattoos having deep meanings. That's why I would be reluctant to get BnL tattoo. Both of my tattoos signify important events in my life. Not to say that meeting BnL isn't an important event :D
That is also not to say anything against WeedMage's BnL tattoo. It's obviously important to you, and that's what's most important :D

I have BNL tattoos that I got updated just last night, but its sort of an inside joke, a friend and I ahve gone on 2 crazy BNL roadtrips to see the band and the tattoos commemerate each trip.. one is a "dirty llama" which was something funny that stemmed from my need to find a llama to throw onstage during $100000.. and then the words YOU AGAIN because Ed said that to me when I was exhausted backstage in Phoenix and made me cry... then a maple leaf to mark the canadian trip we just took to see them...

I LOVE the bands and the last cruise was me and my hubby's first vacation away from the kids ever. Plus GBS was my sons 1st concert ever and bnl was was my daughters first concert ever. I have it on my upper arm. I love it.

Love the tattoo, WeedMage!

My first tattoo was actually in honor of my Grandma (it's a little dove right underneath my armpit over toward my chest a bit). My sis and cousin have the same one.

BNL has been such a huge part of my life for so long...just don't know what picture would represent that love!

I just got my first tattoo, the words "Ad Astra" and a star (all of which I designed) on the left side of my upper ribcage.

I'd love to get a BNL-related tattoo, since I am seemingly addicted; I just don't know what. My next is probably going to be a double helix either on the other side of my ribcage or the top of my foot; depends on what my mom lets me get :P

But a BNL tat? I'll definitely think of it ;)

I was thinking about the eye on the cover of Maroon...but then Maroon wasn't my first love (Stunt was). But I don't really want to get Stuntie...

And I love BLAM artwork, but BLAM just wasn't my favorite time period. I'm not so sure about song lyrics because I'd like the tat to be small.

There has to be more symbols that mean something to me, but I just am having a tattoo art-block!

I very briefly considered geting a staff of music looped around my arm with a favourite guitar riff transcribed, but I decided that a tattoo was not the way to go, for me.

I got the outline of a star years ago, and I've wanted to put lyrics around it forever. I might get BNL lyrics... it would just be trying to decide which ones.

Did your friend say it hurts a lot on the palm of the hand? I want to get a lyric from one of Kev's songs (Spider Arm or Divingboard) though i want it where i can look at it, becuase whats the point if its somewhere i can't see. I would think the wrist hurts a lot too. From experience with iv's, wrists hurt! but its a good place thats viewable.....

She said it was really painful. She dreads having to go in to get it touched up, ha ha. The tattoo on my forearm stops before my wrist, but the closer he got to my wrist while working on it, the more it hurt. It was a very interesting sensation, though. I could feel the vibrations up through my hand.
I would recommend bringing a magazine to read, or a friend to chat to so you can be distracted from the pain. I found I didn't even notice the pain much once I got into a conversation with my tattoo artist.

If you bring a friend to chat with or chat with the artist, its all good. Since mine is on my rib-cage, its one of the more painful areas; but I chatted enough with my buddy and the artist that all was good! The artist was jealous that it didn't really hurt; but we'll see when I go to get it touched up tomorrow.

I have the words "Afraid of change, afraid of staying the same" wrapped around my ankle, like an anklet. For S&DI, I lost 80 lbs, weight I'd wanted to lose for 5 yrs. BNL was just the only thing that got me to do it. That started the ball rolling on a bunch of other changes in my life, including a divorce and a move. I got the tattoo to remind myself to never be paralyzed by fear or allow myself to get stuck in a rut again. If I don't want to stay the same, the only way I can change is to make the conscious decision to do it and get a move on it!

Thanks, all. :) I had wanted a BNL tattoo for a long time but couldn't figure out something that would mean enough to me to want to get it done. Listening to WAGB one day, it just hit me like a ton of bricks. That song had already had so much meaning for me and it just never gets old. It also serves as a reminder to not gain the weight back! :D

Maybe some people have some suggestions.... I want to get "Everything is ok, ok" or "You've got a spiderweb on your arm". Both Kevin lyrics. I'm not sure of how or where though. Preferably where i can see it though like wrist or arm. Any ideas for presentation? I also love this picture of his. http://www.kevinhearn.com/art/popup10.html I have the print on my wall, but a tattoo would be cool. It could be too large to fit both characters in however, so i'm not sure...

Sure! Here's a before shot (http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_photo_gallery_enlarge.asp?id=656412). Yikes. Haven't posted that publicly in awhile.

I've gained a few back from here (http://www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_photo_gallery_enlarge.asp?id=656409), but my face was kind of gaunt when I got down that low! I'm not gonna lie - my weight is a constant struggle, but the tattoo helps to remind me of what I've been through and where I want to go.

If I were to get a BNL tat (which will never happen...I'm not a tat girl) I'd get something involving the Gordon ball, Canadian flag and a lyric probably from either What A Good Boy or Great Provider. I've always liked "We've got these chains that hang around our necks, People want to strangle us with them before we take our first breath" from WAGB and "You and I have been through this before I owe you my whole life, nothing more" from GP. Oh! I also like "If I could move, I'd set him on fire and I'd run " from Just A Toy. Ohhh so many good lyrics!

*shrug*

It'll never happen...but I can dream.:)

I got my first tattoo last April and really want to get another one. I totally agree they should have some deep meaning since they will be with you forever, but what bnl has done for is worth keeping with me forever!

Anyway, I came here looking for ideas...I feel like there isn't a "logo" that I could use, or at least there isn't one that means enough to me. My other tattoo is lettering so I was hoping for something more along the lines of a picture. I really like the idea of the notes of a guitar riff or lyric - not that I would ever be able to pick a favorite! Just wanted to see if anyone else had some suggestions or thoughts!

True... but if you look closer.. ( which most people don't notice - go figure ) the Pepsi logo is a wave pattern. The Gordon ball is more latitude straight ( or is it longitude..??? which ever:rolleyes: ).

My sister and I have been pondering BNL tattoos for a while now. Our ideas include:

-One of us gets a llama and the other, an emu (we both want the llama is the only issue there)
-A squeegee with rosary beads (her idea)
-A stomach with a ribbon around it saying "BNL" (like a "MOM" heart tattoo... but we've confused our stomachs with our hearts... we came up with that one independently but both had the same idea so we may get matching ones :P)
-A raven surrounded by a tattered white flag (my idea)
-One of the doodles from Snacktime (her idea)

We've both decided that since we have loved the band for pretty much our entire lives (I am 23 and she is 18) that we will commemorate that love by inking our skin for them. She has several tattoos already, and I have two. No strangers to body art here!

When I briefly considered getting a tattoo (ever so briefly), I strongly consdered getting a musical chart in a loop around the bicep of a guitar riff. At one point a loop of the riff at the end of the chorus of Break Your Heart. Though I think if I were to do it now, it would probably be that opening riff to When I Fall, or a loop of the Pinch Me guitar loop. Not going to happen any time soon though.
