Remember those rumors about a 20th Anniversary Box Set? Is that still happening?

Eventually, but not any time soon, it would seem.

Rather later than sooner.
The band concetrates on the present (i.e. new record, upcoming tour) than on a retrospective on times past (i.e. having been a five-piece-band).
At least thatīs what I heard. After the Primm show. From Ed.

That is what I expected. Although I understand the angle, I still eagerly await the box set. "All In Good Time" I suppose.

I'm totally okay with that, and really looking forward to a new tour (and perhaps a show in Montreal? lol) more than a box set of CDs I already own... not that that would stop me from buying it :)

The box set as presented on the cruise (no idea if the set list would still remain the same now) had a relatively nice set list. I don't know if they presented a full tracklist at their presentation (I missed it), but later I looked at the entire set list and there was a good number of tracks that I had never heard before, and certainly don't have (considering I have a very large collection - stuff like demos (a couple), Bsides from the early albums, and live performaeces. There was also an unfortunate but, to be realistic, necessary quantity of stuff that's out there and that I, and many of you would have in your collections (tracks from the early demo tapes, B-sides of singles (including cut album songs, and lives sometimes included on early singles) that aren't that rare, and many demos are those already available via LR cds and other releases.
I estimated about 1/3 of the box set was tracks that would be completely unreleased and unheard to me (not unheard of, just unheard - eg: I think the MYSD version of BYH was on the list). Appx. half would have been released in SOME form (tape, CD or online) and the other half dozen tracks were heard of but never released (The theme from the Junos they hosted springs to mind). I would guess that at least MOST people on this board (myself included) would find at least some tracks among that "already released" material that they didn't themselves own (either officially or even bootlegged). I was frankly impressed by the amount of unreleased stuff planned for it, as I'd expected more mainstream-pleasing stuff as I've seen on other artists' boxed sets like at least SOME album tracks, but there really weren't any that I remember. It was really fairly obscure stuff for most people who don't collect singles or LR CDs.
I would have and still hope to look forward to the box set when it should ever come out, as it features lots of great gems (for me personally, the mysd/boaps era content looked the most exciting because the most stuff that hasn't been released or bootlegged comes from that era).
My only complaint with what I saw was that I wished the demos they included weren't the exact same ones included on past LR CDs, the amazon.com Holidays album offer, Barenaked on a Stick, etc. (though I assume the "best" demos in their opinions were the ones that ended up released in those media, and they would want the best content on this, it's a little sad to have the same demos again, and not new ones.) I would LOVE to see them include the original demo Ed recorded for One Week - their biggest song, and a story often told of him recording freestyle rap on a camcorder - I'd love to hear that tape. Similarly, with all the adlibs of the last 20 years that haven't been released on CD, Bird Poop Rap (on an LR CD) was the only adlib one included on the list, I believe.
That said, all of this could be changing or even cancelled since this tracklist was suggested on the cruise. Who knows. At one point, it was promised that the box set would include a DVD with rare tv appearances and stuff, but this wasn't part of the list I saw (don't know if they said anything about this at the panel on the cruise. Didn't hear much about the cruise panel, actually. Would love to hear what was discussed as to the reasons for choices and the logistics of why they picked or couldn't pick certain things.
Cross-posted from my thread @ barenaked.net:
OK, here's what I can remember from the listening party on the cruise.
Jay Coyle, Tyler and later Jim hosted the event and ran through these songs, that will be appearing on the box set CD.
I did write it all down but I've lost the sheet of paper, so there may be a couple more in addition to these (in fact, I'm pretty sure there is, and it's bugging me!)
Lilac Girl - from Buck Naked
Night Photographs - from Pink Tape
Yoko Ono - from Yellow Tape
Same Thing - live, fast version, extra verse
Scared Song - live
Shake Your Rump - live
Material Girl - live, Steve on flute
Stay - cut from BOAPS (has same bass as Get In Line - I liked it :) )
Gangster Girl - from film "The Wrong Guy"
Grim Grinning Ghosts - from some Disney thing that I don't remember
Little Green Bag - w/ Tom Jones from his album "Reload"
Brian Wilson 2000 - released to radio
Some Fantastic electric - live from Stunt tour
One Week - Dave's big beat remix
Everything Had Changed - demo from E2E era, faster than BLAM version
Second Best - demo
Every Song Medley
Juno Theme
Shopping - demo
Michael Brennan - for eMusic's 1,000,000th downloader
I think I have missed a couple - I will post them if I remember or ever find that damn sheet of paper! Jay mentioned that there will be a DVD full of video goodies too, and some other stuff - it's still in the works and is due for release on Rhino Records later this year, so fingers crossed the rest of the stuff will be cool too
I asked about "Sign Me Up" - no sign so far, but I think we should keep asking for it - would love to hear it!
So this was the - or, A, disc from the box set.
However I am feeling pretty pessimistic about ever seeing it, to be honest.
