"How you remind me"? i think.

anyway, great interview!

it was really interesting hearing ed talk about readjusting the steve songs. It would definitely be something to hear ed sing Break Your Heart. How can he not like that one?!?

Ah, you're probably right. I don't know why I thought when they said "first single" they were talking about something recent - like first single off their latest album, or something...

The weirdest part was the (I'm paraphrasing here) "Do you miss Steve?"...."No".

I subscribe to EW and I recall them not even reviewing BLAM. Here's hoping they review All In Good Times.

That part was a little jarring, I'll agree. But not totally shocking to me.

I can't have been the only one that sensed the tension on the last cruise, was I? I just think Ed has moved on, and is happier for it.

Not a lot of people keep in touch with their ex-es. ;)

I thought it was weird when Steve was ad-libbing, then it came to Ed's turn, and he had literally not a word to say. (Think this was in show 2 maybe?) Seemed kinda awkward. Is that the type of thing that you mean, or was there more? I tend to be quite slow to pick up on such things at times! ;)

He didn't just not say anything- he stood there with his guitar and his arms across his chest not even playing anything.

The other thing that stood out for me was the covers set on the Lido Deck that Steve was late for. I can tell you for fact that the other guys had no idea where he was.

Yeah, I remember it being odd, I just figured he was tired or something. Didn't read as much into it as obviously *could* have been read into it.

I heard that Steve was late to that show because he was busy practicing for his VP show, but I remember sensing that the guys weren't happy about it.

The funny thing is that when I first read Gary's post referrring to "him/her" I thought he was talking about me, and then I was gonna have to take him out. We have a history on that subject. :p

But then I realized he wasn't directing that at me, but I probably shouldn't have called attention to her post which is why I apologized for being a shit-stirrer.

Edit: Nevermind on the first part... I was clued in that it's not a post HERE, but a comment on the article. I never read article comments because they always piss me off. LOL! As for the second part... still stands. Move on with your life... for everyone's sake.

No, you were not the only one sensing the tension!
(we are at least two :))

Honestly, as brutal as that might sound, I think it's kind of healthy that he does not miss Steven in the band.
They had 20 years of a great, creative relationship together.
But now, they (both of them) are in another chapter.
Things change, everything ends at some point, that's not a bad thing.
Maybe it would have turned out as something bad, if they did not split though.

Here's a pop quiz I was reading today in a psychology journal:

"If your 'favorite band' is experiencing the first huge mainstream media exposure they've had in about a decade (ie: mentions by Ryan Seacrest, articles in Billboard, interviews with the biggest pop culture magazine in the country) and your reaction is 'hey, what a great opportunity to shit on them!', you are:

a) extremely mean-spirited
b) crazy
c) someone who should not be allowed any closer to said band than a pedophile should be to a grade school.
d) HOLD ON! I THINK THE NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS ON YOUR BEDROOM WALL ARE TRYING TO SEND YOU ANOTHER MESSAGE!!!

I think things got to the point where the rest of the band needed Steve gone as much as he needed to leave. When everything started going downhill in summer '08, I had no idea that this was the direction that everybody would go. I thought for sure that they would stick it out for a few months, maybe do a final tour, then call it quits as a band. I really want to believe that the decisions made a year ago were for the best. At the end of the recording of the new album, I recall Tyler saying that this was by far the best recording experience the band has ever had. So when Ed says that he doesn't miss Steve as a band member, I can believe it. It saddens me that they've apparently lost contact, and I sense (from some of Steve's comments on twitter regarding You Run Away) that tension once again exists between Ed and Steve.

Super Dave
03-11-2010, 02:10 AM
I actually get Ed's explanation about qualifying missing someone. No one but them know what kind of friendship they had so we don't know how they interacted on that level. Their creative connection may have had its ups and downs over the years but it certainly became a successful business relationship. It sounds like they wanted to do different things creatively as time passed and tried to compromise with that over the years in order to keep the business intact. The business side took a big hit in 2008 and that probably led to a review of everything they have done, what they want to do, etc.

But I am not a creative person and maybe cannot understand how people who are in the arts are wired. However, I am a regular guy and no matter how strong a friendship I had or how bad the relationship became with another guy I have known for 25 years, I would check in on that person every so often, would wave to them if I saw them on the street and sit down for a beer with them if they asked.

As an artist, myself (although more in the visual realm), I think it's just too soon. It's been a year. That's it. Artists, by nature, are a little more raw and emotional. Yes, it was a business, but it was also family. 20 years is a long time, especially when you start as teens. I said at the beginning that this whole thing felt like a divorce, of sorts, and healing takes time.

Maybe in five years, that wave and a beer might be more common, and they'll keep in closer touch. Maybe not. But I think there is still more healing to do... and to be constantly bombarded by it in interviews throughout that whole year doesn't make things any easier. How about everyone who has ever known you, and even people who don't know you, ask you about your divorce EVERY time they see you? Zoinks. Yeah, I think it would prolong the healing a little.

They need to do their things, move on a bit, and let time pass. I'm willing to step back and let them do that. I have been, actually. I think this is the first time I have posted anything about the subject on a board in a year. LOL!

Beat it. Find a new band to be psycho about.

Well, if she feels that way, I guess she won't want to cruise next year and therefore won't be escorted off of the boat again like she was last time or demand that they turn the boat around like she did on the first cruise!

I have a feeling that Sixthman would take a pass on that booking. I knew that she was escorted off last time, but had not heard that she demanded they turn the boat around on the first cruise. Was she pissed that she didn't get into Steve's wine tasting event?

At the end of the recording of the new album, I recall Tyler saying that this was by far the best recording experience the band has ever had.

I take this with a grain of salt, because they have said this after albums including BOAPS, E2E, BLAM, and maybe others I haven't recently seen comments about. I'm thinking that a) that's the "company line" (always say the recording was the most fun ever, and always say the album is the best work you've ever done) b) recent fun is difficult to compare to vintage fun c) It might be a tiny little shot at Steve by implying "this no-steve recording was the best experience ever"

Couldn't it be that I said "I take this with a grain of salt" and not "I don't believe a word they say, Tyler is clearly lying"?

In case you've never heard the expression, from wikipedia:

(With) a grain of salt is a literal translation of a Latin phrase, (cum) grano salis. [...] "cum grano salis", in its latin form, it is often used when it is needed to show that intelligence and personal judgement are needed,

And it is defined as using "skepticism, reservation" by dictionary.com

Perhaps you don't take things with grains of salt.

To be honest, Hypo, what she wrote was exactly what I was thinking. If you get your first steak ever from Ponderosa, you could say "that's the best steak I ever ate". If you have your next steak at Applebee's, you could say "that's now the best steak I ever ate". Then, if you make it over to Morton's a week later, you could say "THAT was the best steak I ever ate".

And you'd be totally honest every time.

TheHYPO thanks for the etymology lesson! Of course, I am well aware of the origins and the common meaning of "with a grain of salt." Clearly you were expressing skepticism, and the fact that you did not include my thoughts into your three possible scenerios clearly indicated that you did not see my option as a possibility. Hence I was providing another alternative.

I appologize for the unclarity of my post. I presumed that it would be commonly inferred that the literal meaning of what he said was an option without having to spell the literally meaning out. So please add
>d) this was by far the best recording experience the band has ever had
