Since this was just announced by Sixthman for February 2011 some where in the Caribbean.
What are you guys hoping for an itinerary and line up of shows for the cruise?
I would like to see western Caribbean.
Cozumel, and Progreso.
As for a lineup
Great Big Sea, Gaelic Storm, Sarah McLachlan, and I would love to see Bedouin Soundclash.
Would you like to go back on NCL or Carnival?
If those are the choices then Carnival for me.
Ideally I would love to see them move to Royal Caribbean.
Time to start saving those pennies!

I would love to be on a ship like S+D III where the lido deck was elevated (so even shorties like me could see anywhere!!) I don't care which cruise line.
I want Jason Plumb back!!!!
PSYCHED Guster will be returning!!!!!

Well, here is what the websites have for 5-day Caribbean itineraries departing from a port in FL for Feb. 2011 (not that we're necessarily limited to what's showing publicly, of course):
NCL:
-5 day on Norwegian Dawn departing Miami, Cozumel and Grand Cayman departing Feb. 6 and Feb 20
Carnival:
-5 day on Carnival Inspiration departing Tampa, Grand Cayman and Cozumel, Feb 7, 12, 21, 26
-5 day on Carnival Destiny departing Miami, Grand Turk/Half Moon Cay (Bahamas)/Nassau (Bahamas) on Feb 7, 21 and Ocho Rios (Jamaica)/Grand Cayman Feb. 12, 26
The only itinerary I really don't like is Jamaica/Grand Cayman. Jamaica is not my thing, but I loved Cozumel and Grand Turk. Grand Cayman is fine; I'm pretty neutral on that port.
I agree with mobitz that S&D III had the best lido deck for the outdoor shows, but I think I liked that ship least overall. I'm hoping for NCL again, but I'm just thrilled that the cruise is back on schedule!

Um, yes! (Sorry Sarah :))
For the Bahamas! As a place I've never been before.
Yanno, since it still isn't Alaska ...

SO happy to see Guster back! :D
Hoping for Great Big Sea, Gaelic Storm, Carbon Leaf... AND JASON PLUMB... please??
As for ships, I'd love to do NCL again. I really liked them. But if it was Carnival, I would deal with it.
I agree, I can do without going to Jamaica again. I'd be peachy with Grand Cayman, because we bought snorkel equipment last year (that we never got to use), and we know where we can go and snorkel for free on GC. :D
I'd also wouldn't mind returning to Grand Turk, or trying something new on Cozumel... they were all lovely places. :D

I loved Grand Cayman for the snorkeling too. I'd like to go back there now that I'm learning scuba! :D

I don't think it is the Inspiration because of the pricing compared to the other 6-man cruises, and the limited availability of expensive balcony cabins on the Inspiration. My guess is NCL or another class of Carnival based on the initial pricing. I hope for NCL, but will be a happy camper either way!
And totally agree with Jason Plumb!!!

I'd love to go somewhere we haven't been before.
As for acts, I'd love to hear new Canadian acts, like Buck 65, Matt Track, Sed Sed, Joel Plaskett, Ben Lee...
As for which cruise line I'd prefer, I think it would be Carnival (there was ALWAYS food to be found at all hours of the day/night and the crew didn't shut down the last night jam session). The Legend was the perfect ship, size wise.

I hope they go with an itinerary that we haven't done yet. The Bahamas or something, I s'pose. Otherwise, I loved Jamaica, though I know most of you agree with cruise critic on that one hahaha
And of course also going against popular opinion, I hope they go back to Carnival. I love the ships (especially Legend, though I'm not sure they'd go that small again), and for us the service, food, cabins, room service, everything was much much better on Carnival (well, besides the main venue). I'm sure we'll go if it's NCL again, but we'll be disappointed.
As for music...thank god Guster's back!!! Sarah is annoying haha Hoping for GS, and hoping they bring Griffin House back. It's nice to have someone a little bit more mellow to listen to sometimes who'll play the smaller venues.

I'm another one hoping they bring back Mike Evin - I'd happily watch him and Andy play together every day of the cruise. Carbon Leaf coming back would be great too.

I would love to have a Lido deck setup like on S&DIII. That was the best venue I have ever been in, loved it!
As for destinations, I would prefer somewhere we haven't been yet, like the Bahamas or a private island where I could just lounge on the beach. I wouldn't mind going back to Mexico and exploring more off the beaten tourist track, plus I like being able to use my Spanish with native speakers :)
As for music, I PLEAD to bring back Carbon Leaf and Great Big Sea. I'd also like to see Mike Evin, Jason Plumb, and Boothby back.
For new acts, I would love to see The Alternate Routes and also Serena Ryder (who is Canadian, BTW).

I'm gonna throw in a Mike Evin & The Alternate Routes suggestion for other acts. :)
That works for me. I missed S&D V, but heard about the greatness that is Mike Evin. We saw The Alternate Routes opened for Carbon Leaf sometime last year and they were fantastic. Another CL opener/co-headliner would be on my wish list too (in addition to CL of course): Stephen Kellogg & the Sixers. Great song writing and terrific performers, having fun on stage, and they did Rock Boat and Cayamo this year, so they have an "in" with Sixthman.
I'm thrilled about Guster (with a new album out by then)! Would also love to see Jason Plumb, Boothby Graffoe, Mike Doughty and Ingrid Michaelson.

Greetings!
I was so excited to get the e-mail from Sixthman re: Ships & Dip VII!!!
For the returning acts, I'd love to see The Mountain Goats, The Weakerthans, Boothby, Mike Evin - oh, heck, bring back everyone who was on Ships & Dip V! :D I know Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland are on Cayamo this year - hopefully, the boys can poach them for Ships and Dip VII. I'd also love to see Harvey Danger again but, alas, they are no longer together so it's not meant to be.
For new acts, The Decemberists, The Long Winters, J.P Hoe and The Trews are on my wish list.
As for the boat, Carnival and NCL each have their charms but NCL really needs to get the food situation straightened out (i.e. late-night). My husband and I are are on the upcoming Cayamo, which is on NCL, so we'll see if they learned from last year.

I'd vote for NCL if only because I got addicted to the hot chocolate from the coffee bar last year. Crossing my fingers that next year won't be so chilly and I won't have to drink it. :D Although LeCrete and I did quite enjoy our cabin steward, Marco (gotta roll the r for the full effect) from Brazil, on S&D I. He was a hottie! :D
Gosh, as far as acts go - so many choices! GBS, Guster, Gaelic Storm, Mountain Goats, Sarah, New Odds, Boothby, Dave Foley and Kevin McDonald! I can't handle this much anticipation for a full year!!

Thanks Sarah! I was thinking about trying to find this info., but you're WAY ON IT! :)
I also loved the Lido deck of SNDIII, but the large indoor venues on SNDV were nice. But I haven't been a fan of NCL since cruising with them in '92. While Sixthman was GREAT at keeping the NCL sales pitches down, I still felt like NCL was over doing the up selling. I thought Sean Cullen taking over the morning announcements on Carnival was great, but can't remember if he was allowed to do that on NCL. And it seemed like there were more NCL "entertainers" trying to work their way into the SND5 performances, which was annoying. Yo! Fake Elvis who runs the Karaoke machine, you're harshing my final night jam session groove! MOVE OUT OF THE WAY!
In the long run, it doesn't matter, we're going, and we'll have an AWESOME time.
I'm THRILLED Guster is back! I'd be happy with Butterfly Boucher, Mike Evan, GBS, Gaelic Storm, Jeremy Fisher, The Duhks, Garrison Starr, Botheby, Ruby Friedman Orchestra, Melissa and Luke, The Proclaimers, Mike Doughty, Sean Cullen, The Orb, The Odds (& Acid Wish), Harland Williams, Griffin House, Katy Herzig, k.s. Rhodes, Paul Heaton (pleeeease!!!!!), and Storm Large, who I think would be a great match, but may take up the entire Barenaked Photo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w5U-YT-mRmI
We'll bring Jedward with us, so no need to book them separately. Or thank us. Your welcome.;)

Guster is great! Really enjoyed Sarah McLachlan, GBS, and I'll give a shout to Mike Evin, Jason Plumb, Kurt Swinghammer, and all of the Ladies' side projects. Totally enjoyed the songwriting panel as well.
For new acts to consider: Dan Wilson, The Twilight Hours, Tegan and Sarah, The Weepies.
See you on the ship!

Music: Gaelic Storm, Guster, Sarah McLachlan, Butterfly Boucher, Boothby, Harvery Danger
Ships: No to NCL! The food was bad. Rooms are too small. No Towel animals on your bed at night. Didn't like to stage set up on the "Pool" Deck. Carnival all the way!! Ships & Dip III was by far the best cruise! Good stage set up, good food, rooms were just the right size, they left towel animals on your bed at night, they were very nice as for helping you with any problems. I vote for Carnival!
Ports: Somewhere we haven't been to yet. We've done Turks & Caicos, Grand Cayman, Ocho Rios, Cozumel, Key West. Let's go somewhere new! How about the Bahamas since we never went to due to weather.
Weather: Sunny & Nice in the 80's would work for me! Not like the last cruise.

You just reminded me that I was annoyed we had to pay additional money for some of the restaurants. We don't each much on cruises, but having french fries in the middle of the NCL ship at 1am because it was the only thing I could stomach got a little old. If we're back on NCL, I'll bring a separate tote of snacks. Maybe even some marshmallows for Liam. The soft serve on Carnival was much better, too.

I don't where we go, but I'd like it to be warm weather for anything that happens on the pool deck.
I'm happy to see other people mentioned Harvey Danger, I would think it would be awesome if they would get back together again for a small encore on SNDVII. I would also want the Creeggan Brothers there.
I didn't notice anyone mention Steve. I think it would be pretty awesome to have him invited along also and he could join in to play for one or two songs with the guys. Much like having Andy there and him coming on stage for just a bit.

Maybe it's because I'm F-challenged (and memory challenged, because I don't remember much about the weather), but what didn't you like about the weather on the last cruise? Was it too hot or too cold for you?

02-14-2010, 09:35 AM
it was windy rainy and cold and that is why we could not have the late night Jam on the deck -and some shows had to be moved round

Gotcha. Sorry, I still can't think in F, and 80 sounds friggin' hot to me! :)
DaWezl
02-14-2010, 01:05 PM
80 would be hot in F. The last cruise actually had temps down in 30's at one point. 32F = 0C, so if you weren't on that cruise, you can imagine that it wasn't particularly pleasant at times. But It's not like that's the typical weather. It's like when we get a warm spell up here in CT--it can happen, but it's considered out of the ordinary.
Suebee42

80F is actually pretty nice. To me, anyway. Particularly in February. :D
I use this site all the time to convert temp when I'm chatting with Canadians and Brits... http://www.onlineconversion.com/temperature.htm
80F = 26.6C

After the winter we are having here in the DC area, the temps on the last cruise sounds warm, ha ha! I really don't care what the ports are, I'm just so glad there will be another cruise. The music and the friends are the reason I go, and the fact that we are all there for the same reason!
I'd love to see Jason Plumb come back, and Gaelic Storm, Boothby and Butterfly Boucher.

It's probably too early to have Steve back. The wounds have not healed.
Harvy Danger....as much as I loved them...and would like them back... I thought that sean tried to sing over everyone and tried to be louder than everyone at the final jam... he just didn't play nicely. (sang different songs than the rest of the guys at the same time)....so I think he could be brought back with some rules...lol!! Actually, I doubt they will come back because not only are they broken up, but they were more of a 'steve' influence on the boat. Same with The Mountain Goats.

Soooooooooo excited :D
Liked Carnival better than NCL but I'll take whatever :p
Port stops? Again - it would be cool to see something new but Grand Cayman and Cozumel were two favorites of the past.
But really - as my conversation with my Aunt went yesterday:
Aunt: Anything new?
Me: Going on a cruise next year again!
Aunt (who knows all about the S&D trips): Cool where too?
Me: Don't know. Don't know the ship, the ports or even really the dates - but I don't care. There's a cruise :D
Maybe it's because I'm F-challenged (and memory challenged, because I don't remember much about the weather), but what didn't you like about the weather on the last cruise? Was it too hot or too cold for you?
Wow you don't remember the weather last year? Brrrrrrr. I do but then I can look at my souvenir Key West *sweatshirt* and remember too.

No, I don't know why I don't remember it being cold. Maybe because I love the cold. The only weather-related recollection I have is nearly killing myself by lying out in the sun for almost an hour on the pool deck. So, I guess I only remember the heat of the cruise.

Jake calls me Lizard-People. I live in the desert for a reason and it's cause I love it warm. 80F is really really nice to me. I actually prefer it to be about 82F. I get made fun of because I would wear layers of sweaters to work. It would be 98 outside but people freak out about it and make it 60 inside. I can't stand it; makes my bones ache.
So yeah, the last cruise was friggin freezing! I spent all of 2 hours in Key West, 1 1/2 of those were in a museum.

I was glad I had all my winter clothes from Switzerland with me, when listening to Luke Doucet on the Lido Deck while it was freezing cold.

This made me laugh waaaaay tooo much.. ;-) Can we leave them somewhere deserted??
Personallly I'd vote for Carnival over NCL (atrocious interior quads and crap lido deck where only people of silly heights could see) but I'll be there no matter what..
Please please please bring back Boothby (I've been watching the Bob and Elise clip on you tube tonight and laughing til I cried YET AGAIN), Mike Evin (quite simply the discovery of the last two cruises for me, the joy in music personified), Jason Plumb (cos I missed him on S+DIII), I'd love The Decemberists, but as long as all the side projects are there I'll just enjoy discovering old favourites and new favourites equally..
Regarding shore days, I don't really mind, they tend to be the days I catch up with myself and enjoy some sleepbut maybe I can be arm-twisted into an excursion this year..
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO excited..

Like I have said before, I really don't care about ship, destination and even bands.
Because I know it will be awesome anyway and I know there will be great bands & musicians on the boat besides BNL anyway.
Having said that, here are my preferences:
- sailing out of Los Angeles (I know that won't happen)
- sailing on Carnival
- Jason Plumb
- Jeremy Fisher
- Danny Michel
- Luke Doucet
- Mike Evin
- Hawksley Workman
- Brandi Carlile
- Harland Williams
- Boothby Graffoe
- Reverb
- Stella, Sam Adams
I am very happy that Guster will be back!!!

Luke and Melissa

While I preferred the amenities last year, I don't think they are worth the lack of a cool outdoor venue. S&DIII had the best lido deck for concerts, and I would like to see us back on that class of ship.
As far as music...........other than BNL and Guster, GBS, Thinbuckle, New Odds, Boothby, Sean Cullen, Creegan Brothers and GS for sure, Jason Plumb, Mike Evin, Griffin House, and Carbon Leaf would be great returners.
Does not really matter to me where or if the ship docks.
I agree with NiceyDoodle! Except I would caveat that "anywhere" to "anywhere WARM!!!"

My favourite experience from a cruise line point of view was the first cruise for a few reasons.
First of all, I felt that the food on NCL, and even the 2nd Carnival cruise was inferior to the first cruise. I honestly believe that NCL's business practice is to weaken their [free] dining room menu and buffets in order to coax you to book at one of the dozenish "freestyle" [read: style comes free, but the food costs money] restaurants onboard. I think the 2nd cruise was comprable to the first, but the buffets and lido stations were slightly less impressive, I think.
I also far preferred the layout of the Legend to the subsequent ships. The biggest reason for this is because the last two ships were designed such that one of the two dining rooms was in the middle of the boat; so on one or two decks, you actually had to go up or down to get from the front of the boat to the rear on those decks. That wasn't fun to do on a regular basis. I didn't enjoy the service on NCL as much as on carnival, and I definately felt that the ports ended up being far worse last time than any other time (not entirely NCL's fault, as weather was a factor - but I hear the NCL private island we were SUPPOSED to go to actually also is quite boring and useless). Some of the venues on the last ship were pretty good, but the first boat was the best all around cruise experience for me (ignoring the actually bnl/sixthman factors)

While I agree that the food on the first cruise was way better than the food on the second cruise, I do not agree with the comparison on the third cruise. The food was great. I think the service over all was better last cruise, at least I could get a waiter to bring me a bottled water in a venue before the show was over. As far as ports, I never got off the ship the last two years, so you can tell they are not important to me. I do not cruise for food, the ports and to a large extent I do not cruise for service............I cruise for four reasons: 1) MUSIC, 2) friends, 3) Music and 4) friends. The rest is just icing. To me the venues, especially the killer lido deck, on S&D III were the best by far and I will gladly walk up a flight of stairs to get from one end of the ship to the other.

i loved the legend and the food...the ncl cruise food in the free dining rooms...actually made me physically ill ... it was awfull...and i really hated the concept...well if you want better food pay more...wasnt i paying enough...i loved that carnival would seat anyone together at a table...ncl didnt do that...i didnt meet any new people dining with them...there are pros and cons of both...like carnival for food and outside venues...ncl for inside venue...and maybe the legend will always stand out with me because it was the first cruise and nobody knew what to expect and the ride we were going to be on and continue...:)

Although I prefer NCL overall, I have to agree with some of you that the Legend was the best because we had NO IDEA how awesome it would be.
My favorite non BNL Moment: Sitting on the Lido deck to catch the first 30 minutes of Guster and then go to a massage. It was my first Guster show - needless to say I couldn't leave and the cancellation cost me $90. Best money I ever spent on a concert. :)

i loved that carnival would seat anyone together at a table...ncl didnt do that...
That was one of the things I didn't like about Carnival. If I go to dinner or breakfast with my friends, I'd rather sit with them and not some random people. It only happened twice on the first cruise- I think because every other time we went to the dining room we had enough people to fill the table.
sarah11918
02-18-2010, 11:06 PM
Yeah, we ate once in the main dining room at Carnival (first night, and just 2 of us) and while every now and then it's OK to eat with strangers, that's not the most relaxing thing for me.
On NCL, we ate in the regular dining room 3 times, maybe? They had tables for 2 and lower lighting and it was actually kind of (or could be construed as) romantic. Of course, by the 3rd cruise you'd see people you knew at nearby tables and could stop and say hello. But, I felt a lot more comfortable at a table meant for 2 in something that felt like a real restaurant than the huge open dining at Carnival.
I'm really sorry for the people who had issues with the food, but I found the NCL food to be far superior (if admittedly less available) than Carnival. I don't remember much about the first year's food other than "meh, buffet" (because as I said, the first year and not knowing anyone, it was really uncomfortable in the dining room). The second year, I would almost have said it was downright bad. But the third year, we were always pleasantly surprised. It's probably a difference in attending as a couple than as a group of friends.

Right there with you, sister! I don't get those "snow" people.
So, no one would like to see Oakhurst back? I loved having them everywhere and just bursting into song at any moment. I want to see ALL the KITH, Boothby, and the Odds for sure.
I still believe they will make Steve an offer he can't refuse and he will come back as a "special guest." I haven't been wrong yet.

Also, I can take or leave Oakhurst. Good on them for getting on in the first place, then getting invited back, but I didn't find them all that interesting after the first dozen times I heard them all over the ship. Not saying they weren't talented, because they were, but meh.

Vote for Fascination, everyone! haha
Here's info on the two ships. Fascination: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnival_Fascination
Looks like Fascination goes to Nassau and either Key West of Half Moon Cay....so, at least partly new itinerary! It was dry-docked and upgraded throughout in 2006.
Dawn: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norwegian_Dawn
I know this means nothing, but according to wiki Dawn has had some damn bad luck haha Rogue wave, passenger overboard, power outage....crazy weird lol

I've no real preference cruise line-wise - both S&D III and V were great experiences so I'd be happy going with either style boat. I'd much rather sail out of Miami than Jacksonville but if that's where we end up sailing from I'll be there without any complaints.

SuperStar Scorpio? Really?! That's awesome.
I voted for Norwegian. I had a great time on the Jewel last year, and the departure from Miami and trip to the Caribbean outweighed the possibly lousy Lido deck. That said, I'll do my darndest to be there no matter what they choose to do!

The pool on the Lido deck on the Fascination is huge, so that will not make a better venue than the Dawn when you look at the layout. And the main stage seating is far superior on NCL - stadium vs the tables and chairs on Carnival. Jacksonville and the Bahamas - meh.
I thought the food on NCL was much better - I ate in the steakhouse one night and the buffet the rest of the time. The late night offerings not good, but I hear they are changing that for Cayamo so we will see if that turns out to be true.
Last 50% balconys - big deal for me. WANT BALCONY and not pay $1700 for it.
So crossing fingers for NCL but lets face it, I'll book if it is the SS Minnow.:)

These are my thoughts. The NCL Dawn's capacity is 2,224, the Carnival Fascination is 2,052....................now to me the Carnival Victory is the best ship of any we have sailed, and looks way better than the Dawn or Fascination................it is the largest ship with a capacity of 2,758..............do you suppose that is why they don't go back to that ship? They would have to sell another 250 cabins roughly.

I feel like our service on Carnival was *way* better than on NCL - we didn't even get a single towel animal last year. Plus I want to go find the black & white bread pudding I got this year on TRB that was pretty much the most orgasmic thing I've ever eaten.
On the other hand, on TRB this year, my friends found a "palmetto bug" in their cabin climbing on their beds, and because the ship was totally sold out they wouldn't move them. But 6thman did get them a bottle of Dom. :P

I was not able to go on S&D V, so I did not experience NCL, but I did vote for that option because the Carnival boat is smaller than what we had for S&D III. I'm going to try to make it this time regardless of what cruise line we have. I missed being on the last cruise.

It was a hard decision for me - six of one, half dozen of the other for both but I ended up with NCL mainly for the main stage set up. Tho, now seeing how the pool deck is set up, I'm glad I went with NCL.
We did mostly buffet and I thought the food was better on NCL, even if it was less available. I never went hungry :P They also have more balcony cabins and while I might have to be extra budget conscious this year, I might have to splurge on the cabin - especially if I'm by myself - I'll want that balcony. (Tho it would be better for me, by myself, to resist the urge to cocoon in a dark room!)
I may be out of money by the time we're cruising but I'll have it when we book. I can worry about saving money when it's time for all the extras.
NCL got my vote.
I much preferred the freestyle dining of NCL to the 2 set dinner times of Carnival. I am short and not at all crowd assertive, so the main show venue of NCL with individual seating was a far superior concert experience for me. I found the staff friendlier and more relaxed than on Carnival where I had a couple of negative interactions. Food quality was comparable. I hated the Lido deck on the Jewel, but that was my only negative!

I went on III and V, and I thought the NCL ship was cleaner, that the food was better, and that the main venue was much nicer. Yes, on III the lido deck was better for the Sail-Aways, but I thought the wandering drink staff were intrusive and annoying. So, I voted for NCL.

Ditto on all counts. I also think the weather really, really tainted our collective memory of the Jewel's lido deck. I was all the way in the back on the upper level for sail away, and I had a blast... it was just when the weather was cold and s***ty that is sucked. ;)

I voted Carnival.
I was on S&D III. Loved the Victory. I have been on Carinival twice and havent been disappointed yet.
I know the Facination is smaller, but I am willing to try it. It looks like from the deck plans thre is room to build a Lido Stage again.
The Dawn can't do a outdoor stage because the pools are all over there. they would have to shut down most of them to build the stage.
I would be happy with either. I dont care to much about Balcony rooms because I cant afford it.
If they do go NCL again I would try it.

I thought my friend and I were the only ones who enjoyed the rocking of the boat! Those days on V when the seas were high were the best!

Is it just me, or did the wording in the initial email make it sound like there is a cruise in Feb, they're just in the early stages of planning it (not deciding whether to do one or not). I didn't get tentative or "we're thinking about" from this. To find out the band isn't even on board yet (pardon the pun)... ugh!

Maybe the band is just playing dumb to not have to answer questions they don't have answers to? Didn't somebody ask them about it right before the first e-mail, and they were talking about a summer camp? I have an idea they might not just want to be put in a position where they're being asked for details.
But I could be wrong. I believe that's happened once or twice before.
Also, I refuse to believe I won't be cruising next year. Because if I get word that it's not happening, people in my daily life are going to be very, very unhappy for quite a while.

I guess "initial stages of planning" means they haven't actually signed with the host band ...

We are in the initial stages of planning a 5-day cruise from Florida to the Caribbean and will be inviting our friends Guster, some other great bands and most importantly YOU to join us. Prices will begin at $799.00 per person for Interior cabins, $999.00 for Ocean View and $1,099.00 for Balcony Cabins.
Before getting too ahead of ourselves, we want to know... should we hold a cabin for you?
If we can get your responses by Wednesday, February 17th, that will help us finalize our plans.

"Ready and Excited" to Sixthman = "We're running numbers to see if we can make a return on investment."
"Ready and Excited" to fans = "OK, I'm packed. Which port are we at?"
"Ready and Excited" to the bands = "There's gonna be another... what?"

If you use the word "will" AND quote prices, it's fair to assume whatever it is is a done deal.

The more I think of this, the more frustrated I get. (Obviously, I have too much time on my hands this morning - waiting on time to leave to go see Shutter Island.)
That email could have been written MUCH better - still be exciting - but flat out told us they wanted our preferences as they began judging interest in a fourth cruise.
Seriously. How could ALL of us have jumped to the same conclusion?

Because yet again, 6thman shows their complete lack of tact and professionalism.
Well I pretty much shat myself when I first read the email, but now it definitely doesn't seem certain. Hopefully it won't be long until we know for sure one way or the other.

All credit where it's due, but someone just pointed this out on bn.net, from the main website:
Ships and Dip... VII
posted by Barenaked Ladies on February 26, 2010
We wanted to clear up any confusion popping up about the Ships and Dip cruise. People who'd previously gone on the cruise recently got an email alerting them of one we'd like to do next year. We're doing the cruise and we're just trying to gain some feedback on it right now. It's coming back in 2011!
Good spot, didn't see that!
It's ON, then...
Just spoke to Joy from Sixthman on the live chat feature of their site
----------------
Liam:
Hi there, I notice that Barenaked Ladies have just changed an announcement on their official website to say: "We're doing the cruise and we're just trying to gain some feedback on it right now. It's coming back in 2011!" - I just wondered if Sixthman could confirm that the event IS happening please?
Call accepted by operator Joy. Currently in room: Joy, Liam.
Joy:
Hi Liam!
Joy:
No official announcements have been made yet and we don't have any details, but if BNL put something out there already, then I can confirm that it is in the works for Feb-Mar 2011.
Liam:
Awesome! Sixthman did send an email out a couple of weeks back with prices of cabins - is this a definite itinerary or should fans be taking this with a pinch of salt until something more concrete is announced?
Joy:
No, we have not sent out anything other than a general interest survey to get feedback.
Joy:
I don't even know the itinerary or pricing yet.
Liam:
I see. Well I hope to hear something more about Ships and Dip VII soon!
Joy:
We will be sending out a save the date in the next few weeks. It sounds like the guys are just really excited to share the news. The deal was just finalized.
Liam:
Oh cool, it's nice to have a definite "yes" because I know there has been a little confusion about it. Thanks for clearing that up!
Joy:
We just haven't been able to put out anything definite yet as it was just confirmed yesterday. We'll get a save the date out soon.
Liam:
and I guess currently there's no news on the ship it will take place on?
Joy:
Not announced, no. We will let everyone know as soon as we know that it will not change.
Liam:
OK, thank you
Joy:
Take care Liam! Talk to you soon!
Liam:
Thank you Joy
----------------
So the main points from this:
The deal was just finalized.
as it was just confirmed yesterday
So there we have it!

Is Riviera Maya an actual cruise destination, or just a general location? When I try to look up info about RM, I get info about Cozumel. So, could the cruise destination actually be Cozumel or maybe Costa Maya? RCI does have a 5 night cruise to Cozumel and Belize.
Riviera Maya pretty much runs the length of the Yucatan pennisula from Cancun to about Tulum. Costa Maya is a cruise port in the Riviera Maya.
There is a Norwegian itinerary of 7 days that includes Belize and Costa Maya. Maybe a 5 day cruise would include just these 2 ports?

I'd be down with that. :)
I know our 7 night comedy cruise in November (on RCI) is hitting both those ports (as well as Cozumel and Grand Cayman), so that's why I thought to check out Royal.

Yes, I would think most would want a date pretty soon. I just care about date and ship, so I can choose a cabin, and then stress out about not getting it.
And after I stress about getting the cabin I want, I will stress about a hotel in Miami. Then I will stress about booking a flight. Then I will stress about shore excursions... ;)
sarah11918
04-15-2010, 09:53 PM
Heh, at least I spend most of my time in hotels and traveling, so I can't book any of that stuff anyway. (No idea where we'll be flying in from or out to.) All I do is stress out about hotels, flights and travel, so the cruise dates known really just means one more piece of the puzzle filled in.

Yeah, some info would be great. I'm fortunate that I can be pretty flexible when putting in my vacation dates. My problem (and it's a burden, I tell ya. ;)) is that I get four weeks of vacation each year. I'd really like some solid dates so nothing conflicts with other time off, and I can figure out my creative budgets to afford it.
I only work this job for the vacation time, trust me. :D

My call to Barbara at Sixthman today:
B: Thanks for calling Sixthman, this is Barbara.
C: Hey, Barbara! Greetings from sunny So. Cal.! How's everything blessed thing in Atlanta? Is Andy treating you guys well?
B: Well, actually Andy is out on a boat, but I'm IMing him right now.
C: Great! Then could you let him know that the Barenaked Ladies Fan Club members have taken it upon themselves to officially release a date for Ships and Dip VII and that the consensus is it will be the 2nd week of February 2011 and that "save the date" announcements should be sent out immediately.
B: Okay. Let me just tell him that right now. You said the 4th week of February?
C: No, the 2nd week.
B: Right, the 2nd week - oh! He just went offline. Drat!
C: Darn! Well barring getting that info. to him, what are the odds that there will be an official announcement before the end of this month?
B: Hmmmm....well the gal in charge - spearheading that effort - is also currently at sea, but I would say an announcement should be coming soon.
C: That's fantastic! And when you say "soon", what definition are you using to describe that word?
B: Well, I would define "soon" as before the end of the month, but I'm weird.
C: No, no, no, Barbara, you're NOT weird! We LIKE you. You're practically one of us, and that's why we feel confident in telling you our cruise date, because we know you can make it happen!
B: Well I know it's getting close, but that's all I know, and now you know as much as I do.
C: Okay, well, thanks for helping and passing the message along. We'll look forward to hearing from Sixthman "soon".
B: Okay, thanks for calling. Have a great day.
I tried. :(
My fall back plan is that we all start talking about it being February 6 - 11, 2011 and then it will be out in the universe and the universe will make it so. Sarah, what ship and itinerary do you have for the 2nd week of February 2011? Visual imagery is very handy when sending messages out into the universe. OH OH OH!!! I know! Sarah, what ship and itinerary do you have for the 2nd week of February 2011? Visual imagery is very handy when sending messages out into the universe.
Well, it seems like we've established:
Feb 6. (Which is the week before Cayamo, which sails on Feb. 13)
Sailing to Costa Maya (or perhaps Cozumel, if Riviera Maya is interpreted liberally) and Belize
NCL (Dawn or Pearl) or Carnival (Glory or Inspiration)
I'm not sure how best to compensate for the fact that there's no current itinerary that matches perfectly:
The Pearl sails a 7 day itinerary that includes the stops we've heard. So, if best guess is a longer cruise is chartered and made shorter for us, that's reasonable. The Pearl only has scheduled sailings on Jan. 30th, Feb 13th (Cayamo) and Feb 27th, though. Plus, last time SnD and Cayamo were both on NCL, they were not on the same ship.
But, the Dawn sails on the 6th as a 5 day cruise, just to different stops (Cozumel and Grand Cayman), so if best guess is that we co-opt a ship sailing for 5 days and change its stops, then that's reasonable.
Carnival Inspiration has that same 5 day itinerary out of Tampa on the 7th. (So again, right dates, wrong stops). This is the only suggestion I have that leaves out of Tampa, but we know Cayamo will sail out of Miami, so it just depends whether Sixthman wants the hassle of zipping from one location to another for a quick turn around.
Carnival Glory has a 7 day Western Caribb. out of Miami on Feb. 6th going to Cozumel, Belize, Roatan, Grand Cayman. (So again, potentially right stops, but we'd have to abbreviate the itinerary)
The Glory, Valor and Legend all have this general itinerary, but departing on the 20th (in case they decide to shake things up and do SnD after Cayamo). BUT, since Cayamo is a 7 day cruise, this gives no turn around time between cruises, so I think that's why it makes sense that our 5 day cruise goes first, giving Sixthman the weekend on shore before Cayamo.

Does anyone think Barbara may have tipped her hand when she first asked 4th week of Feb??
I've been thinking about this, and I think we need a report back from the source to better judge. if I were trying to give something away without giving something away, I probably would have said, "You said the 4th week? Oh the second. Are you SURE you didn't say the 4th week?"
Then again, I can't picture myself saying the "4th" week of a month as opposed to the "last" week of a month. So, I can't tell whether there's any significance in using what (to me) is a less common phrase. I can't see the conversation going "2nd week." "You said LAST week?" That just doesn't make any sense. There's no logical reason to confuse second with last, unless the line cut out or something. 4th at least is a number, like 2nd, and people confuse numbers all the time, even when it seems ridiculous to do so.
So, I really don't know whether to make anything of saying the 4th. I just know that if we get the last week, then Sixthman has to jump off Cayamo that morning (after a late night, presumably) and get ready to board us immediately thereafter. And since we have clearly proven to be the higher maintenance group (and a little more obsessive, given a main headlining act vs. a collection of artists), does it make sense for them to be on a ship and unavailable the entire week and weekend before we board? I just don't know who would choose to put themselves through that. :)

What do people think is more likely, taking a 5 day cruise off-itinerary or shortening a 7-day itinerary that already goes to the ports anyway? I have no idea what's "easier" for a cruise line.

It's not even been announced yet, if you couldn't tell by anything in this thread???????? So uh, who knows?

Last cruise (Feb 2009) I believe the presale (for past cruisers) started May 21st 2008, and the public sale started June 4, 2008.
Edited to add: Of course, we knew about the cruise much earlier that time.... or so I thought. Just checked email records and we received our "Save the Date" on April 1.

Hm, 2nd week's a no-go for me. Can we move our positive thoughts to the 4th week? I'd be willing to rearrange my entire academic schedule for the 4th week. C'mon, let's make a first-time dipper out of me! ;)

I'm thinking shortening a 7-day itinerary that already goes to the ports would be more profitable for a chartered ship. I don't think SnD5 was at full capacity, so if a cruise company thinks it will take as much fuel and food for a full ship vs. an unfilled ship, they'd prefer a shortened itinerary to places they already go.
Of course, I've been asking for a 7-day cruise from the beginning, so that would work for me! With the extra time we could take TWO barenaked photos! The standard one, and then one where are backs are to the camera, waving good-bye to where we've been - but we'd be TAN (or red) in the second photo! AND the "floaters" could be face down! LOL! We could probably get more floaters that way!

I can always go for a 7 day cruise, but I think we're in the minority on that.

Hey dam, yup it's me! Not in Winnipeg any more, though. We've now moved to PEI. I'm glad my random musings and speculation are entertaining for at least some of you. Joe, for some reason, only likes to deal in known facts. Pffft... where's the fun in that! :)

More seriously now that we've been there. We LOVED our trip to Iceland. (And ironically enough Reykjavik airport is one of the few not closed because of the volcanic ash.) If anyone gets the chance to go while their currency is still half-off, take it. It's one of our favourite places.
Of course, we talk about a lot of things. I was looking at Mazatlan real estate yesterday, and this past winter we were on a big Mauritius kick. I'd like to enjoy our new home at some point, though.
