View Full Version : Your favourite Barenaked couplet?

I'd have to go with:
I'd bring her gold and frankincense and myrrh,
She thought that I was making fun of her.
There's so much going on there! The hilarious earnestness of the lovesick fool and the responding cynicism of the unconvinced object of his affection - the glittering but strange gifts dashed against her suspicion. Also, a tricky Biblical reference pulled off beautifully - what better gifts can he offer his adored than the most famous gifts of adoration of all? Then there's the bathos of the line following - how else can she react to such an over-the-top courting display. And as for the rhyming of 'myrrh' and 'her', so simple and yet unexpected on first hearing - lovely!

Mine is also my signature...
But it's really hard to choose just one favourite!

I gotta go with:
I could hide out under there
I just made you say underwear
and:
If you think growing up is tough
Then you're just not grown up enough.

Mine is also my signature.
But I actually love:
Let's play tic tac toe
I'll play "x", you can be the "o"
because I used to use that example when I worked with students on parallel structure in writing, and how when you *know* the rules, you're allowed to break them for effect.
I've thought about how I could teach entire English courses using nothing but text from BNL lyrics.

I have a few...
I'm so sick of fighting and that effigy you're lighting looks
An awful lot like someone whose name I just can't quite place
You live above your dad's four-car garage
With your vinyl and imaginary entourage
Call the police and call the press
But please, dear God, don't tell my friends
Our yesterdays are on a loop;
A marathon of heartbreaking moments
She's like a baby, I'm like a cat;
When we are happy, we both get fat
But I don't tend to worry 'bout the things that other people say,
And I'm learning that I wouldn't want it any other way
A is for asshole, which is what I am, how rude of me,
I owe you an apology I'm sorry
I can stay up all night. I can have a blast.
I can breakdance, I can fight, I can kick your sorry ass.
...
OK, this is is my ACTUAL favorite.
If I hide myself wherever I go
Am I ever really there?
(thanks to mysd.org LOL)

I'd have to go with:
Anything plain can be lovely,
anything loved can be lost

I agree - I think that's my favorite. I like so many but I think that's tops.

#1 Favorite (a popular one)
If I hide myself wherever I go,
Am I ever really there?
I was a baby when I learned to suck,
but you have raised it to an art form.

I'm a minister and I've thought about I could reference/quote BNL in every sermon I write...

I did an essay on BNL once, in CEGEP. Got me a 98% or so... ;)

My wife really likes
I'm so cool
Too bad I'm a loser
I like
I was a baby when I learned to suck...
and
If you think growing up is tough...
but there are so many I like. And for so many different reasons.

In all the confusion, there's something serene
I'm just a posthumous part of the scene

The holy trinity are there in your purse:

"She brushes her hair, she climbs down the stairs.
Suddenly she's aware that she's beautiful."
(from Lilac Girl)
Although I have a certain fondness and empathy for:
"You get your PhD, how happy you will be
When you get a job at Wendy's and are honored with Employee of the Month."
these days...
If you think growing up is tough
Then you're just not grown up enough
And for every useless reason I know
There's a reason not to care
Chickity china the chinese chicken
You have a drumstick and.... (nah I'm kidding :p )

I don't buy everything I read.
I haven't even read everything I bought.
Pretty much sums me up skeptical and lazy

I'd have to say my favourites are:
Who's breathless now? Who only hyperventilates?
Who'd die for you? Who's dying inside anyway?
On behalf of humanity
I will fight for your sanity
The credit card receipts, the dirty sheets
The souvenirs of men who cheat
So if you call, I will answer
And if you fall, I'll pick you up
and
We, the undersigned, feel undermined
Let's redefine "employment"

I recently discovered this line from "Stomach vs. Heart", and I absolutely adore it.
"...tummy just growls, not real words, mostly vowels, and I always forget sometimes why."

"Yes, I'm out of line,
But you're out of your mind..."
Honestly. Best burn song ever.
Love it. ^_^

It's time to make this something
that is more than only fair.
(Is that a couplet?)

I'm not sure if mine are couplets either....had to Google "couplet!" haha!
There's a lot I will never do
Some fantastic, I know it's true
Late at night when the wires in the walls
Sing in tune with the din of the falls......(I love the pictures this brings to mind)
Do you believe that we are all innately good
Do you think that you would love me until tomorrow if you could
You, stationed in the warm glow of the t.v.
Too patient as I'm playing L-O-V-E
Is it true? Well it's true enough I guess
Join the chorus of the second best
Ever since we said our goodbyes
The onion rings, the phone makes me cry

Y'all have named so many of my favorite so I'm just gonna add a few gems rather than try and pick a favorite!
If you think of her as Joan of Arc
She's burning for you get your car out of park
All around the room your things are placed
And next to you, he fills the space
Everybody's laughing, while at me they point a finger
A world that loves its irony must hate the protest singer
Repetition of suspicion
Takes a lie and makes it true

Every choice we made.
I would love to live with giving this
shaky voice some shade

Also me!
But I like the line:
I'd use a metaphor, but I'm through with you.

I almost put that one in, too - but then I thought, why not just the whole song? :P
It's definitely my fave song right now.
