I agree, Philip, shopping doesn't really do it for me either. Maybe it's the live version with 20 straight minutes of "La la la's".

I have an on-again/off-again dislike for "Call My Calmly."
I have a perpetual dislike for "Baby Seat." Particularly live. Ugh.
"Second Best" gets on my nerves, although I don't know why, exactly.
"Vanishing" isn't bad, but it's boring and is probably the least fitting on already disjointed album. I do tend to skip it.

Whoa... it seems as though most of my favorite songs are common dislikes in this thread. Anyway, here are some songs that I can't get into:
Long Way Back Home - It was okay to listen to as a rarity, and was even nice to hear performed on S&D V, with Kev on mandolin, but how on earth did the four piece make it a regular on the setlist?
Easy - I could never get into this one. The repetitive guitar part along with the chorus are major turn offs.
Something You'll Never Find - I don't particularly care for this to begin with, plus it drags on way too long, and could easily be cut down to around 3 minutes.
How Long - Don't care for it at all.

Shopping gets to me sometimes, and Another Postcard is one I regularly skip.
I Can, I Will, I Do is very hard to sing along with so, not one of my faves.
Surprised to see so many with Baby Seat in their list. This song has one of my all time favorite lines:

I think I was influenced by all the people praising it in the other thread, but I don't hate "Great Provider" anymore. Or maybe I'm a pushover.
A lot of the stuff on BLAMe/n I skip over. I don't know why. I really liked it when it came out, but not as an album. More as a collection of songs. I know that's what it is, but, you know what I mean?
MOST SKIPPED

This thread is blasphemy!
I think this is the only post I can relate too. For you who doesn't like Just a toy, I suggest listening to the acoustic version, it's much more relaxing and helps you better understand the lyrical angst. Also I noticed a lot of the more repetitive songs ("Peterborough and the Kawarthas", "Shopping", "In the Drink") I love these ones because they calm you right down.
How can there be four pages of people saying which songs they don't like. This is a fanpage, no?
Amicustoall
01-18-2010, 10:30 PM
razezar, yep this is clearly a fan site, as it is owned and run by the band, or its management or something else closely related to the band. But I do not understand why it would be surprising that there is a discussion about what songs various fans do not relate to, like, appreciate, get or otherwise choose not to listen to in as great of frequency as others? I mean, do you think being a fan means you have to love everything a band does? Or love it all equally? Is it ok to discuss favorite songs? If so, why?
I am far and away not a typical fan, and do not look at things in a typical fan manner. I do not have a favorite BNL song. I do not have any songs that skip when listening to BNL..........of course that is because I always listen to a cd from cover to cover as it was produced. Are there songs that I would not go out of my way to listen to more frequently? Yep. Does that make me a bad "fan?" Nahhh. It means I am human and have a mind of my own, and tastes of my own.
There is something I skip on every album, except E2E. Not that I don't love Jim's singing but some of his are on my list.

I love Beautiful - because Kevin's keyboards on that song are, well, beautiful.:)

Woah, whats wrong with Break Your Heart and Fun and Games??
I have to play the "that's just my opinion" card here. I'm not looking for any board debate with these reponses, but since you asked....
I just think Break Your Heart is a musically a poorly written song - it uses a simplistic and cliched chord structure and melody, and the lyrics remind me of something The Sphinx would say in the movie "Mystery Men". It probably took about half an hour to write the song, and in the end, it's just a way for Steve to show off his classically trained voice, so the whole thing just kind of comes off arrogant and uncreative. Which is really the opposite of almost all their other songs.
I just think Fun and Games is irritating because it takes a naive approach to the topic, kind of like a presidential candidate running and getting elected on a platform of closing Guantanamo Bay and ending a war, when he clearly doesn't have all the information at hand to make such claims. One year later, now that he has all the information, we are in TWO wars and Gitmo is still Gitmo (whether rightly or wrongly, I'm not going to debate.) The naivete in the song just rubs me the wrong way. I skip it every time and almost walked out of the Songwriter's Workshop on S&D I when they played it.
But... that's just my opinion, which I think was the purpose of the thread in the first place. I'm not looking for a thread war here...

For some reason, all of the Kevin songs on BLAM/en are annoying me lately. I was listening to it the other day at work and just could not get passed the first minute of any of them. However when Hidden Sun came on I dropped everything I was doing and just listened. I don't quite get it.

Hmmm, as a part time musician and songwriter, this really interests me. Do you like the "song" or do you like the "performance"? Or is it that one drives the other?
There is a LOT of music out there that I appreciate for the talent displayed in the "performance" - Joe Satriani, Yngvey Malmsteen (sp?), modern jazz, Broadway musicals, Stephen Page in "Break Your Heart" - but don't necessarily care for the "songs", per se.
There are also a lot of great songwriters out there that don't necessarily have the performance talent, but that doesn't necessarily make the "song" a bad one. I actually appreciate a good song more than a good performance because it's all about the "creation" rather than the talent.
As a music fan, do you separate the two, or is that just a pretentious wanna-be musician blind spot that I have?
Anaria
02-26-2010, 06:20 AM
I'm not a musician and I couldn't say what songs are weak or strong. I do like my music based on lyrics. Always sucks when a song that gets me musically has lyrics I disagree with, I find myself singing along then get annoyed at myself for falling into it.
The songs I almost always skip are Break Your Heart, Tiny Little Song and Another Postcard.
Break Your Heart, I think, is a great song. I used to love it a lot. Now it so specifically describes what happened with my ex-husband that I can't listen to it without crying. It's almost as if they went into the future and psycho-analyzed my ex and then wrote the song, using some of the things he said.
The other two I just don't get a ton of enjoyment out of.
Yikes.. A thread of non-stop gasps from me on reading it.. Some of my favourites on on people's lists but hey different views are what makes the world go around in my opinion.. It'd be a rather boaring place if we all liked the same thing..
I do love how music/songs mean different things to different people and how it can connect with people on different levels though.. One persons utter joy = another person's utter dislike..
Have to agree re Shopping though, its my only regular skipper..

It feels like the time that I told an avid Queen fan that my favourite Queen song was Sweet Lady off of A Night At The Opera. It seemed to irritate him incredibly. No matter what I post here, someone is going to tell me I'm crazy.
And I know many of my favs have been mentioned by you in here, so it's all about whatever mood I'm in. (Spider and Baby Seat are in my top 10, btw.)

Agreed. Shopping is probably one of my least favorites. The studio version is tolerable, but any live version is unbearable.
I hate to say it, but the versions of Kevin singing "Sound of Your Voice" have not impressed me. I know this is a new fav. for a lot of folks, but I'm not a fan. Maybe my mind will change when we see them on Tuesday here in Columbus... but I doubt it.

I have a few, I suppose (though not many considering their huge library)...
Top of the list of skipped songs/songs to leave off compilations are (I know it's supposed to be 3, but I find it hard to choose 3 "winners"):
King of Bedside Manor
Box Set
New Kid On The Block
Love Jim's intro on The Flag, but not keen on the rest
Stomach vs Heart
Straw Hat
Spider In My Room
In The Drink
Shoe Box
These Apples
A
The Wrong Man
Great Provider
Conventioneers
Sell, Sell, Sell
The Humour of the Situation
Baby Seat
Helicopters
Inline Bowline
As you might guess, Maroon is one of my least favourite albums, Stunt and E2E escape unscathed (OK Shopping usually makes it onto a compilation, but tends to get skipped a bit... and I agree about the live rendition getting a bit tedious)
I haven't included anything since E2E, as I like to give a collection a good hearing before I form a personal opinion, and BLAM/men still feels too new to dismiss anything yet.
I have so say, I'm surprised no-one else seems to share my view of A (maybe I just don't like mention of Apples in a song!!)
OK, if I really had to pick 3, I think Straw Hat, Stomach vs Heart & A would be my choice
<feels really judgemental now, having put so many songs in the reject bin>
Just to redress the balance.... I absolutely adore pretty much everything else... which I think is why so many are in my skip list.... there are so many BNL songs and only so many one can fit on an MP3 disk for the car (I have BNL on continious loop when I drive), one has to be really ruthless with anything that isn't on the "Can't be missed" list.

When I Dream
Oh good. So I'm not the only one. I just cannot listen to this song all the way through. Bores me to death. Same is true of Watching the Northern Lights. I don't even think I made my way through that one once.
I used to completely despise In the Drink and Spider in My Room until I saw them performed on S&DI. Now I realize it was just a little misunderstanding I had with those crazy Creeggans and I actually quite love the songs now.
Maybe one day I'll learn to love those other two I can't listen to. I do pretty much love everything else.

I just cannot stand that song for some reason. I used to dislike Sell Sell Sell, but I've come to really enjoy it now. I also never got the interest in 'Powder Blue'. I think the song is too silly because of the whole idea of a shoebox, it's hard to explain. The video is ridiclous too, seeing them all playing in a shoebox. Same reason why I don't like "Another Postcard". I know BNL is all about humor but some songs they take it too far. "One Week" is an exception, it's a good song because the beat is awesome and it's really quick.

I agree with kinch, it's blasphemy to choose. I believe in blind allegiance, rose colored glasses for me when it comes to BNL's catalogue. What's next, I'll have to choose my favorite Beatle? (which is Sir Paul McCartney by the way)

That's ridilcilous. That's the one thing I don't understand about BNL fandom, if someone doesn't think BNL is automatically perfect, they get attacked. I'm sure BNL themselves have certain songs that they don't like anymore.

I wasn't refering to this board. I meant in general based on my experiences over the years since I've become a BNL fan in the 90's. I'm definitely a fan but there are things I don't like about the band. I don't think any band's catologue is perfect.

Hmmm....
I don't really have a least favourite...but I do have a love/hate relationship with One Week and It's All Been Done. I think that's because they were totally over-played in the late 90's. I always skip past the two of them when I listen to Stunt. Otherwise I listen to every album straight through with no issues...even with Another Postcard which sometimes makes me cringe. :D

I was reading that bnl book (public stunts, private stories) and like a lot of the songs the author said were best are not ones I like. He said When I fall, wrap your arms around me,
same thing, and this is where it ends are the best. I guess I don't like a lot of their serious songs too much, I like them when they sound (or actually are) poppy and happy.
Also whenever I listen to All in Good time and that song "Why aren't we makin' the loooove we're innnn", I make this face: D: I mean, it's such a typical love song, which causes it to lack appeal.

And stupidly, I think that may have been part of why I didn't give it much of a chance to begin with...the video would come on, I'd hit "skip" and that was that. Being a captive audience in the car with nowhere to go to escape it kind of forced me to look beyond that. I'm glad it did. :)

Only a few songs get skipped in my rotation - These Apples (Ugh!), Have You Seen My Love :::shudder::: and I Can I Will I Do ( sorry Steve).
The rest are like the Energizer Bunny; they keep going over and over and over. (or something like that)

Ed's holding of the first syllable of every line in a really clean tone, over and over...and over...the drawn-out first line of the chorus, followed by cramming of syllables: 'wouldwantotakeitoutside'...the last line 'raaather...saaay...goodbyyye'. The entire cadence is super-polished and seems designed to show off the singer's ability to hold notes, as if that makes a good melody. Listening to some Backstreet Boys just now to compare, I admit it's a rather unfair comparison, but the whole production still sounds like a charmless 90s pop track I'd hear in a grocery store. Thanks for asking!

I must be listening to another song because I hear no Boyband music in that song. To me it's a bluegrass country song. *shugs* I guess everyone hears their own thing.
Born on a Pirate Ship probably has the most songs that don't work for me -- many of the songs try to pull off oddball lyrics and extreme shifts in tone that don't really fly. "I Know" is kind of a trainwreck -- I can't stand the bad bridge that rips off "Low Rider" and has those squirmy lines about "cyber-masturbation" and "circumcision" and "what goes in my daughter's pants".
On a different album, I also think some of Steve's lyrics in "In the Car" fall into the category of "too much information." I just don't want to hear the word "masturbation" in a song and Steve has done it twice!
Ed's clunky, trying-too-hard-to-be-quirky lyrics marred some of his early songs, like "Same Thing" and "These Apples," and "I Know" as mentioned. Actually, he still writes duds sometimes -- I always cringe at the line "what's more ironic than a hippie in Versace" in "Down to Earth." The whole song could use different verses to go with the catchy chorus.
"Intermittently" is kind of an awkward song, in particular the way the first line is repeated. I always thought the relative failure of "Maybe You Should Drive" was partly attributable to putting this second after the sublime "Jane"; if they'd put something like "Alternative Girlfriend" next the album would have gotten off to a much better start.
The "funny" songs from "Gordon" haven't aged well for me. I can't imagine ever listening to "Grade 9" again.
I like the band, I do! But these stick out for me.

per another previous response regarding "Hello City" , have you heard Rock Spectacle's versions of Hello City and These Apples ?
Hello City, if you don't know, is about getting a bad reception in a town and includes the musical puns of an entire chorus of the HouseMartins "Happy Hour". The effect is one of their stabs at light rock/ jazz fusion.
as for These Apples, hello?????.... how many guitartists, or rather musicians period, besides Ed can actually play a bluegrass banjo part on an acoustic guitar??? No one I've asked has ever heard of it being done by anyone.
As for Never Do Anything... good question.
My least favorite... hmmmm...do I have one??? - Rudolph / Oh Holy Night off Barenaked for the Holidays ... only because they sound obligatory and not like any real effort was made. I know Kevin is way better than that.
And to BnLKat...
War on Drugs is one they are glad to not have to play, but it holds a special, non- BnL related, place in my heart for CNN's use of it as background music in relation to some very serious new stories.

Yep, I have. That was actually the first thing I tried when attempting to convince myself to like it, but it didn't work (it had worked with These Apples, so it was worth a shot.)
I wouldn't rule out my ever liking it, though...there have been a bunch of their songs that I didn't much care for at first that are now among my favorites (Straw Hat--clearly I was either drunk or insane the 1st time I heard it, War on Drugs, The Wrong Man was Convicted, Blame it on Me, Wrap Your Arms Around Me...to name a few).
I'll keep tryin'.

Sorry you feel that way. BOAPS is one of my favs.... probably because I saw the 2nd show on the tour ( 1st time that setlist was done ) and got to hear the, obviously, first ever performance of " In The Drink ". Jim, Ed, and Kevin... all on guitars...nothing else....(what makes it so memorable, and obvious that it was the 1st performance, was the fact that when it got to the 3rd verse, Jim forgot the words...."caught a snowflake on my tongue, a feathery crystal....." until it got to " once the birds have migrated". That and the hilarity of Ed forgetting to take a breath before " I wanna drink.. your..( huge breath ) blood". He did a great save and managed to squeeze it out (you could see it on his face) without dropping out.)
FYI note: the guitars were (Ed) acoustic, (Jim) acoustic/electric mix, and (Kevin) straight electric. Very great memory.

In response to Hello City, I like that one much better live than the original recording. I enjoy the song, but it makes me a little sad that the band still seems to feel that Halifax is all about drinking, fist fights, and donairs (they don't mention donairs in the song, but they keep talking about them when they're talking about Halifax).

I agree with both. Celebrity is garbage, sorry if that sounds harsh but it's such a whiny song. War on Drugs had the potential to be a GREAT song but it's obvious that they were struggling to find things that rhyme. Some of the lyrics like "thrown away like a paper cup" are so random and out of place.

War on Drugs had the potential to be a GREAT song but it's obvious that they were struggling to find things that rhyme. Some of the lyrics like "thrown away like a paper cup" are so random and out of place.
You know a song's got its priorities mixed up when it has a line like "when nature calls, you go" referring to suicide!
