View Full Version : I Love You - written by???
You all know the song "I love you" right? The lyrics are credited to Steven Page, Ed Robertson, Jim Creeggan and Andy Creeggan.
Does anyone know who is responsible for the line "I like silk, I like ice cream sandwiches too, I like fish sticks, but I love you" ?
I'd like to credit the actual author of that line in a speech I'm writing.
anyone know or know how I could find out?
thanks

Only easy answer I can suggest would be tweeting @barenakedladies (I personally probably wouldn't tweet @ steve) and hoping for a reply, or else, contact Andy (http://brotherscreeggan.com/section.cfm?Section_ID=127). It's pretty clear that the song was a Creeggan concoction. I suspect he would have as good a memory as anyone about that. I can't promise he'll get back to you quickly though. There's really no way other than from the author to know who wrote what in a song.
It is notable though that "fishsticks" was often replaced by other items by Steve in live performances (perhaps most famously in the 1993 Massey Hall show where "I like those American chocolate bars you can only find in some convenience stores... but I love you". In the 1991 Danforth Music Hall show, he sings "I like little triscuits with melted cheese on top... but I love you".)

Don't know 100% , but the implication in the liner notes is that Steve and Ed were responsible for the words and Jim and Andy for the music. and I agree, contacting Andy would be best not just for the memory issue, but also because he will actually respond.

If I'm not mistaken (memory must serve me) The Credits specifically credit Jim and Andy re: music, but all four re: words. This actually suggests to me that Jim and Andy came to the group with this song they'd written and it was either a) nearly complete, but Steve and Ed opted to suggest some tweaks to the lyrics or b) was just a framework of a lyrical idea which Steve and Ed flushed out themselves (as happend with Jim and Kevin on E2E) or amongs the four of them.
eg: Jim brought the concept and music of "You can always get it right next time... next time" but as I recall, Ed and Steve wrote the rest of the verse lyric pretty much on their own. similarly for Long While (another b-side Jim song they took on themselves). Second Best may also have been that way. I don't recall right now.
So in short, I would have no idea whether any of the four has a greater chance than the others of having written it just from the credits

FYI - The lyric is actually "I like soup," not silk.

Didn't even notice that typo in the first post - good catch :)
